I was a weapons mechanic on F4s in 'nam. Still have nightmares.

The only nightmares I have are about bending over all the time and hitting head on objects on the belly. #2 and #4 man on crew.

Though visually striking, there is something visually confusing about this photograph.

For me too. It appears the aircraft is taking off from a field of prairie grass and the viewer is at pretty much the same level as plane. Is this a crop from a larger image?

Nice shot, love the exhaust plume and looks to me like he has just left the ground and retracting the gear. I have a love/hate relationship with these birds.

Bob, I agree. I can't imagine an F-4 having the gear in transit that low over a field. And a hilly field at that. He must have been very close to a crash either taking off or approaching to land. It is one of my favorites.

Short story. I built a large radio control model of the F-4 many years ago. After a hard landing that damaged one of the landing gear, I repaired and retired it. After joining the local VFW post, I hung the model in the post. I painted my model after a full scale hanging in our local Aviation museum. As luck would have it, one of our members flew the F-4 and had actually flown the aircraft I modeled. He said he thought the tail number looked familiar, so he went to his log books, and sure enough, that plane was one he had flown. That was a WOW moment for me!

In 1973 I was on a crew flying a C-141A from Yakota AFB (Tokyo) to Elmendorf AFB (Anchorage). I was the third pilot and it was my leg to fly left seat. While working Anchorage Approach we were told Elmendorf was closed due to ice fog and we were asked if Anchorage Intl. would be a suitable alternative. We said yes and they turned us towards the runway. I had never seen ice fog and had no idea of what to expect. We landed and taxied to the terminal. While we were debriefing with the USAF representative assigned I was sitting next to a table that held a commercial model of the C-141A. The nose number of that model was exactly the same as the airplane I had just landed! That was an eerie experience for all involved. Felt like something out of Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone."

Great shot, as an infantry guy in Vietnam those planes often provided support. They were impressive when in action. When on the main base I watched them take off, but never as shallow as this one. They always hit the throttle and pointed the nose up, really loud but cool. Then again flying low off the base could get you shot down.

In 1970-71, I was stationed in Danang, RVN. I was what they called a BB Stacker (munitions guy) and the bomb dump was located near the end of the runway off to the side of the perimeter road.

I used to love to watch the Phantoms take-off at night with the afterburners glowing. What a sight!

They also had an engine test stand for the F-4's J79 engines located across from the bomb dump, and at night you could see and hear the engines on the stand being run up, and just when it sounded like they were about to explode, they would kick in the afterburner, and you'd be convinced the engine would shoot off that stand like a missile.

Love that plane!

One tough aircraft able to take a lot of punishment and still come home. I was also stationed at DaNang and used to go to the snack bar for Air America at the airport and watch the F4s take off or do fly-boys, sometimes on afterburner. One morning, I saw an F4 pilot eject while the plane was still on the runway (don’t remember whether taking off or landing). The shoot opened - sort of. The pilot was injured, but I understand he survived.
