I am just short of jealous....wow what a spectacular place to shoot. I adore it. You are so lucky to be able to do this.......more please. What a lovely place on the earth.

Hi Blair - I am happy that you like these last shots and on the trip overall. The mount definitely is a lovely place with plenty of history. We will be moving more into Normandy, the D-Day beaches today and the American Cemetery tomorrow as our trip continues.

Of course I can only post a limited number of photos of each place and for many these are sufficient. If however you want to see more of each place, I invite you to access my on-line photoalbums at www.webervision.weebly.com There you will find all my photo albums, click on the "Chronological" tab, the listing will open up, select whatever album you want to see, you find the 3 albums covering Brittany/Normandy under the dates 2015 May, click on "Short" to see a truncated but long enough album, or on "Full" to see the entire version, which can be very lengthy. As the picture collage opens up, click on the first picture and it will fill the monitor and you can move on with the cursor. The little "i" in the top right lets you toggle the info panel with discription at right on or off. Enjoy - but don't feel obligated to view. Let me know if you have any questions.

We have now moved from "Wild" Brittany to the more gentle NORMANDY, though it definitely had its violent moments in history: settled by the Celts about 2400 years ago, invaded by the Romans under Julius Caesar, raided by the Saxons in the 3rd century and by the Vikings in the 9th century. The name Normandy reflects the Viking (i.e. "Norseman") origins. Today Normandy is predominantly agricultural in character, famous for horse and cattle breeding, its products include world-famous cheeses (i.e. Camembert) and apples, which form the basis for its well-known ciders and calvados, an apple brandy. In recent history, Normandy was the scene of the landing of the allied forces towards the end of WWII.

I include a map which shows our drive through Normandy and the places we visited and will present over the coming days.

MONT-SAINT-MICHEL is one of France's most recognizable landmarks, visited by more than 3 million people each year. It is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Its strategic island location, occupied since the 5th century, has been recognized for centuries, it served as an abbey but also as prison. It used to be closed off to land traffic during high tides, but a relatively new higher causeway now guarantees dry access at all times.

Oh, what a magical place. I am afraid that I would never want to leave there. How far is it to the uninhabited island? Those groups look awfully small compared to the distance between the islands.

Hi Mary Ellen - Yes, it really is a magical place, we had this on our wish-list for decades and are so glad we finally made it.

I don't really know the distance and couldn't find any reference, but it is supposed to take about 1 1/2 hours to cross and same back. Of course walking on sand and through possibly knee-deep water is slow, so I would assume it to be about 4 km / 2 1/2 miles, but I am not sure. We did not do the walk, but very much enjoyed the visit to the mount. Just a bit unfortunate that there are too much of us tourists around, especially on the narrow single street with cobble-stone steps leading up. Once in the abbey, the crowds get dispersed and it did not feel crowded.

Thank you so much and I will visit your website and check out the images from your trips.

I can't travel much anymore due to health & finances and so I really love seeing all the wonderful photos people take on this forum and all the great & useful tips that get posted to help us new-bees who are still trying to master this exciting hobby.

The internet has opened up the world to everything at the touch of a keystroke and we will never be the same again. My father fought on that Normandy Beach Head with the 29th division and visited those cemeteries that you will see in 1991 at one of the earlier reunions . He died in'95 and still cried about it right up to his last days.

Good luck and thanks again for the wonderful work you do.
