Being "of age" I jokingly call for a fork lift to get me off my knees. Darn thing never shows UP!! I like the articulating screen. For my EOS 77D I can connect to my smart phone so that my live view is operating in a stand up position. BUT ya gotta get the camera down there first. Otherwise, on camera live view works best with a "Dark Cloth--think view camera. I use my jacket over my head and I can see very well.

Keep shooting!

Maybe what's on your last card will surprise the folks left behind.

Utilizing what I suggested a person can put the camera on a small tripod, tie a string around it and lower it into position without bending over and go sit in the shade of a nearby tree up to 100 ft. away and control the camera on a cell phone without all the problems you're talking about.

Incidentally, I'm 82, degenerative spinal problems, old sports injuries, bad knees, bad shoulders, and without certain crutches like Arsenal my cameras would be gone. "Where there's a will, there's a way."

I'm getting up there too, but, like you, it's not the getting down part, it's the getting up.

Equipment wise, I would suggest tethering to a smart phone, tablet, or laptop while shooting. I don't do it, so I can't help with the details, but I've seen others using a pretty simple rig - apparently just a cable.

Technique wise, I find that even with a bum knee and sciatica, I can get up fairly well by rolling sideways rather than attempting to stand straight up.

Getting old may suck, but it certainly beats the alternative.

You're right, old age sucks. But look on the bright side---it doesn't last that long.

I intend to make it last absolutely as long as possible!

My favorite features are IBIS for my shaky hands and a tilting rear LCD to get low angles. I find adding a dark cloth really makes a big difference shooting during the day. Just a bath towel will do the job. Or you can cut up any piece of dark material into a 36"x36" square and get real fancy and put weight in the corners to help with wind.

At age 66, I'm just learning how to be old. I had a left hip replaced a month and a half ago, and have to have something to push my arms against to get up from prone or kneeling. I have and have seen others on eBay, a 30-year-old Bogen monopod...the heavy duty aluminum one, for about $20. I bring it with me, in my tripod bag. I can push up with that and on to the next shot.

Again thanks to all. I didn't start this thread to complain about getting old, I enjoy every day. The question was work-arounds. I was out shooting bees today, no trouble the blooms were at eye level but when the big yellow and black centipede came racing by I was unable to get the shot. Not life ending but frustrating.

I do appreciate all the suggestions and I especially like the garden kneeler. I am quickly approaching 72 and have quite a few of the ailments already mentioned so I won’t bore you with my list. One thing I plan to do is put a bird feeder in my backyard and set up a small portable blind on the patio. Then I can sit in a comfortable chair and photograph the birds and squirrels, which I have always loved to shoot anyway.

That Garden Kneeler works well - I have used one about 5 years for gardening. The cushioned kneeling pad is a blessing for tired old knees - mine has worn out so I'm getting a whole new kneeler - the two handles make it possible for me to get this tired-fat-old body erect and moving again, and flipped over the seat is a welcome place to rest. I haven't used it that much for photography, it's a little unhandy to haul in the field but I plan rigging it to my always present backpack. Enjoy!

I have also used a sturdy monopod for years and have "climbed" it hand over hand to return to an erect position. Just get a sturdy one!

Which means not one that tightens with just rotating. Those that have that clamp type of release are best, they really lock.
