Will it hurt the lens or camera to keep a lens on the camera in the bag when I go to use it again in a few weeks.I have a D7100 Nikon with a 24-85 vr Nikon lens , I always keep the lens on the camera is this good or bad. Thanks Jim Bianco.

Jim,
I've never separated lens and camera for storage, etc. Sure I have several, well numerous lenses, that aren't on cameras, and a few cameras without lenses on shelves or cabinets. However, the ones I use regularly are on the cameras 24/7. I've never had an issue with either.

I have always kept lenses on my cameras. In fact there are four cameras sitting on the shelf above my desk and they all have a lens on them. I have never had an issue with any camera because of a lens being left on it.

Leaving the lens on the camera will not hurt it, leaving it in the bag? That is a little harder question to answer, I live in a high humidity state so I am pretty careful to not leave my gear in bags, only bad things can happen in dark moist places, like the inside of a camera bag, if I lived out west, I would not be as nearly as concerned, the best place you can store your gear is in a clear sided covered plastic container, that way it is protected from dust and still exposed to light which is not conducive to fungal growth. I simply store my gear on dresser tops and only use the bag when out shooting with multiple lenses.

First it depends on the bag. In a good camera bag, absolutely not. One way to keep dust and dirt out of your camera is to do as little changing lenses as possible. Good luck.

I'm a rank amateur. I keep a lens on my camera bodies (D750, D500). I think most people do. It's not the same lens all the time but rarely is either body without one. I've never had a problem because of it.

I would think changing lenses often could lead to contact wear and more opportunity for dirt to enter the camera. I leave my walk around lens most of the time.

I have a lens on the camera at all times.
No reason for me to remove it when the camera is not being used.

Sometimes worry in my soft-sided camera bag but when airline travelling I use my Lowerpro 450 protactic bag which is pretty sturdy. Still, I often seperate so to reduce any torquing. When I go out for the day, if it fits, I dont seperate.

It won't hurt anything. Leaving the lens in place is the preferred method because: (1) anytime you remove the lens dirt can get in so leavening it on helps to keep dirt and dust off of the sensor and, (2) there is less wear and tear on the mount and contacts.

When I put my cameras in a case for storage or transport, I remove the lens. I have a case for my 2 Nikon bodies and smaller lenses, a case for larger Nikon mount lenses, a case for larger Canon mount lenses, a case for smaller Canon mount lenses, a case for Canon bodies, a case for accessories, two cases for flash gear and a case for batteries and chargers. A place in a case for everything, except all the stuff in the camera cabinet.

Store my lenses in a bag all the time. My cameras are seldom stored since I used them so frequently and when I do its with a lens mounted sans battery.

No, sometimes I have the same lens on for month! On one of my movie cameras one lens stayed on it for a couple of years!
