Ok, let see if this trading up idea will fly. I have a Leica IIIb with 50mm Enst Leitz Wetzar Lens. Both ser.# of the camera body and lens date them to 1938. With the camera instructions book and a book on Leica. Camera is working fine. Test with film. I would like to trade for Zeiss Contax III. Camera body and lens have to be made in Germany and work. NO RUSSIAN COPY. Local pick up only. Send PM if want more information. Remember no money.

No need, Mac … when you get to that level - it's the same as having acquired a D5 !!!

D5 is different Chris. At the time the Df was introduced there was the D4 and now D5 and the D6 will be around before you see any new Df.

Think you're missing the point, Bebu … the Df you and Mac share - are in the same tier as the D5 … no, of course they're not the same camera, by any means - the sensors are different, for a start, as well as the Res
… plus - the D5 is almost twice as much as the Df - but, prestige-wise … it's in the same ball park, as the D5.

You even hear talk about folks here having made the proud decision to have traded up to the next camera, up the line … like, it's no skin of their nose. But, I'm wondering here - whether these kinds of rash decisions make any sense, at all. You all know you can NEVER EVER get back the monies you spent, originally. And, chances are - you will have had to sweeten the deal - adding some cash in to get the upgrade you want. Just seems to me, that, no matter what you're getting in exchange - just t'ain't worth it. What's your take?

I have bought progressively more capable or up to date cameras 5 times since buying my original D200 in 2006. I still have all of those cameras except one, which was a mistake from the beginning.

My first attempt at moving to full frame was with a D610, which I bought used. It arrived complete and in good condition, but I hated it immediately and knew that it was never going to work for me. It was too small to handle properly, and the controls and menus were awful, at least for me. A week later, I traded it for a D810. And yes...I lost some money in the deal. But not as much as if I'd hung on to it and never used it, in which case I'd have lost all of what I paid for it.

So while I generally agree with you, there is the occasional extreme case where the exception rules.

Okay, Larry … exception acknowledged … and - thanks for the tip, btw … I'd thought if I EVER went to a FF Nikon … the D610 would've been it … now, I know better … so, I guess I'll go for the 6D2, then …

Don't know about prestige but the Df can cure GAS but the D5 will soon make you long for the D6. Ask Mac and he will tell you his GAS is cured.

The D4 and the DF share the same sensor. But that is where the similarities end.

Chris...
The 610 might be perfect for you, as it is for many others. There's just no way it was going to work for me.

I would rather have one or two cutting edge cameras than a dozen rusted edge cameras. It's true that trading provides a small return on investment, so instead of trading or collecting older cameras I donate them so they still serve a purpose. My last two D300 bodies are being used by a couple of Hogs.

"Might be" isn't good enough … the 6D2 has more of what I'm used to - in my 60D and T4i ….

I have ENOUGH Nikons, anyway … too many, in fact!!!!

But, thanks, anyway, Larry …

MAC won't get the D6 because he has the Df which cured his GAS.

I used a Canon F-1 for over 40 years. Now I have used my 7D for 5 years. No need to change, but I will be buying new glass soon. Need more reach.

If you are into photography as a business, cost is a consideration, as you need to be profitable when possible. But, if you are into photography as a hobby, it is like any other hobby, upgrading is part of the enjoyment of the hobby. That would be my opinion.
