Mine is the rugged, waterproof, "drop it or kick it" Olympus TG-5. Sensor is not nearly as big as Gene's RX100M6, but it has some unique features and is giving me images I like.

Another to consider is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT5. It has many of the advantages of the TG-5 and has a full manual mode lacking in the TG-5.

It goes against the grain of the traditionalists here, but part of the TG-5 appeal is how well the more automatic modes work. Most here have "real" cameras for when they are in a mood to do manual.

And the TG-5 shoots RAW which would probably persuade me. The Panasonic (I actually meant the FT-7 not the 5) I only mention because of the manual, if that is important, it is rated to go deeper underwater and is just a little cheaper.

Nikon 1 V or J series.
Fantastic little cameras with ability to change lenses, if you so desire, or use you Nikon F mount glass with the FT-1 Adapter with full functionality and no loss of light. The V1 has a viewfinder and takes same batteries as D800 series.
Check em out. I have the V1 and the J5

Your phone, if you carry one. You can't get more compact than that.

For high zoom range, pocketable, WITH viewfinder I suggest either the 21 MP Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 ($347.99 new) or the 12 MP Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS50 ($279.00 new).
If non-pocketable is OK, Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80 (now on sale $297.99 new)
For maximum zoom range, the Nikon COOLPIX P900 ($596.95 new) or the new Nikon COOLPIX P1000 ($996.95 new)
All above with 1/2.3" sensor

If you want a larger sensor, pocketable, reasonable zoom, WITH viewfinder try the 10X Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 (now on sale $497.99 new) or 15X DMC-ZS200 (now on sale $747.99 new) both with 1" sensor.

Then there are the expensive Sony models RX10 and RX100.

You can compare 4 models at a time at B&H. Here is an example:

After many hours of reviews and comparisons (since I'm trying to upgrade from my phone) I picked the Panasonic zs100. I am a hiker and trekker/backpacker so I want something light and small and I sent away for the camera yesterday. My hiking buddy just got a Canon G9X ii and took it with him on Sunday and it sure does take nice pictures. But it has no viewfinder which is important to me since we were taking pictures in a very bright sun. I know his Canon is half the weight of the zs100, I hope I didn't choose wrong. If I did I will buy a G9X ii also.

But not at a quality level (as yet) for a shooter used to results from a FF (like the OP's Z6)

Good choices. Given the OP is shooting a Z6 FF, one of the ZS options might be best

Congrats, enjoy your new camera. At less than 3/4 pound I bet you won't find the ZS100 too heavy at all.

I bought a new backpack last summer just to save 11 oz. so in reality it is kind of heavy for backpacking for several days.

We need more criteria. Pocketable? Zoom range? Sensor size? Viewfinder? Which MUST you have, which would you LIKE to have?
For mega zoom with viewfinder and hot shoe I have a Canon SX50 HS (Now SX60HS or SX70HS).
For pocketable, 1" sensor, with viewfinder and 10X zoom I have a Panasonic DMC ZS100.

I just bought a ZS 100. How do you like the image quality? I love my Canon G7X for it's 1.8/2.8 lens, but disliked no viewfinder to view photos in the sun which the ZS 100 has. I thought of returning it after reading everywhere the image quality is lacking, but this little camera is growing on me.

I got the same one. And it’s husband proof. He can drop it or fall in the water with it when I hand it to him and everything is fine.
