Thanks. I'm considering a GE smooth top, on sale at Lowe's for three more days. My son gets a 10% employee discount, and my Lowe's card gives me another 5%.

Do you also have a military discount? Veterans get 10% off - wish it had been available when we built our house 20 years ago.

As to glass tops - we have one on our KitchenAid gas stove and I hate it - it's always a project to clean. Next stove will have a metal top - a bit of Windex and a paper towel does the trick!

If you can swing it, I highly recommend induction stoves. I have a GE induction and it is unbelievable to cook on. You do need pans that have magnetic bottoms for it to work. I carry a small magnet with me in my wallet to check out pans when I go shopping. With an induction stove, you don't need a crock pot as they have 20 different settings per burner and the #1 setting is like cooking with a crock pot. You don't have to worry about anything burning, it just slow cooks. And it costs less in electric power as it cooks really fast. If you can't swing for the induction stove, then give yourself a present and get a single induction burner with at the very least, 1200watts.

In November, we moved to a different home and the stove is a GE electric model JB645RK2SS. It heats well. We were concerned because it was not convection oven and we were used to that from our previous Samsung. This oven seem s to work well as is. Unfortunately, the ceramic stove top scratches easily, so you have to be really careful and make sure your pan bottoms are smooth.

We have had a GE profile electric stove for three years now, no problems! It is the smooth top model with two ovens.

I see FlashGordon also recommended Induction.
We also bought the Frigidaire model, with the convection oven.
I have cooked on gas, and conventional electric both...
I will NOT go back. ever.
It even shuts off if you leave it on, with no pan on it.

Easy to clean because the top doesn't get hot and burn food to it.
It is amazingly fast... as fast or faster than gas...
Do yourself a favor, and investigate INDUCTION cook tops.
catch them on sale for less than a 1000.00 now a days...

My daughter has an induction stove, it is awesome. I would seriously consider getting one of these. I used it and it gets my stamp of approval. I liked it so much, we bought a single burner hot plate type of deal. Don't like it much, but it basically just sits there. I think because there is a small learning curve, and we still use the regular stove, we just don't use it. It also, being cheap, has less features than my daughters. One thing I really like is the top doesn't get hot at all, so old fogies like the wife and I would be much safer.
