So what shutter speeds/apertures are you getting? ISO set to?
We have no idea about what you are getting or trying to achieve.

Yeah, in all cases I'm going to iso 100, f 22-26, doing all the normal things one would do to cut down light. About to try nd10 stacked with an 8...

An example for you, Sunny 16 Rule, high noon equates to 100 ISO-1/100th-F16, now subtract your filters, ND.9 equals 3 stops, that has you at 100 ISO-1/15th-F16, now say your variable is 6 stops, 100 ISO-4 seconds-F16 is your new settings, so if you want to hit 15 seconds you’ve got to have a stronger filter, ND 3 perhaps, just count it down, pretty simple.

I think an ND-8 is 3 stops.

Are you in full Manual? If not, the camera
will just compensate for the ND.

Right. And that's no problem. Same thing will
happen in manual or auto exposure. It's what
is supposed to happen. He wants his shutter
to slow down. AE will slow the shutter, unless
in S mode [Tv in Canonese]. Maximum slow
down would be A-mode. P-mode will vary.

It should be, but there are 3 ways to
label ND filters:

The right way, the other way, and the
wrong way.

ND-8 could be just "ND hyphen 8".

Mebbe it's "ND negative 8" which is a
bit ambiguous .... might mean "loss
of 8 EV steps" but it might mean it has
a filter factor of 8, which would lose
only 3 EV steps.

The only unambiguous label for a 3 EV
steps loss by an ND filters i "ND 0.90"
[actual DENSITY of a neutral DENSITY
filter]. What this customer PROBABLY
wants is an ND 3.0, which produces a
10 EV steps loss [really 9.7 but who's
counting ?] That will turn a 1/2 second
unfiltered exposure into 4 minutes, to
definitely streak the clouds.
