I would like to upgrade to L Glass and looking at CANON EF 24-105MM F/4L IS & CANON 200MM F2.8 L F2.8 lenses. The 24-105 asking price $700 & $500 for 200mm. I have a 40D WITH EF-S-18-135 USM IS , 70-300 4-5.6 USM & 85MM 1.8 usm . What do you think of these lenses & price? I shoot grandkids, landscapes and just nothing in particular. Will the lenses work on on 40d? Thanks!

They will work (and they will work with a FF body, if you ever get one)

Will you be replacing the 18-135? It would likely be redundant except for the wide end.

Of all the lenses you list, I only have personal experience with the 70-300 (which my wife owns). She likes it, but I find it wanting in contrast and sharpness. It is my least favourite Canon lens.

Is the price good on the L glass ? and would the quality and sharpness on the 24-105mm overcome the range of the 18-135?

I can't really comment on the price except that it does not seem much out of line. You'd want some idea of the condition of them, of course.

Really, only you can judge if you care about the range of 18-24.

One other up-side is you get out of the EFs line (which are only useful on crop bodies).

I have the 24-105 L lens. It is portable, very sharp and a good piece of glass to put on the camera for a day's outing, as long as you don't think you will need to shoot long distances. But as an all-rounder, it is great. Can't comment on the other lens as I don't have it.

The 18-135 is a great lens on your cropframe ! What you really need is a quality longer range lens like the 70-200 F4 L W/ 1.4X and close-up lens. The 24-105 duplicates what you have except faster (F4) and 24 is not really wide enough for cropframe !

Either the 24-105L or the 200 mm F2.8L will suit your purpose; the price can only be judged on condition. Of the two, the 24-105L is the best walkaround lens, and is superb.

If you want to spend some $, consider the F2.8, 70-200 IS II.
It's outstanding!

I doubt that you would find a 200 mm prime lens that useful on a cropped sensor camera. It would be equal to a 300 mm lens. If such a lens would be useful to you, you wouldn’t have to ask. A lens of that focal length would be a specialized lens and of little use in general photography. It would also be difficult to use.
The 24 to 105 would be about as useful a lens you could have. The rage and quality would be some thing that would last a long time.
