Enjoyed that. When the Navy base was open in Grand Prairie, TX they would come once a year for the air show. Always a treat.

I got to stand on the flightline and watch my brother take off from that NAS.... He was a student pilot stationed at Beeville NAS. It was a fantastic day.

That was some nice video. I was stationed in the same hangar with them for 1 1/2 years at NAS Pensacola back in 1961-62. A lot of people think those pilots are on the wild side but they are some of the most dedicated and serious aviators you could meet. The maintenance crews for those aircraft were all handpicked and every bit as dedicated to their jobs as the pilots were.

I have only one question - why the hell was there a NAVY base in Grand Prairie, Texas?... lol

Well I was stationed at a Navy base. in Minneapolis and one in Millington, Tennessee I was originally scheduled to go to a base in Norman Oklahoma but ended up in Minneapolis. A lot of what the Navy does doesn't require being around water. You have to remember that every Congressperson and Senator wants military bases in their district. It boosts the economy tremendously for those living in the area.

Both Chance Vought and Temco (aircraft mfg) had plants there. Temco built the Navy trainer at the time and I have a publicity photo of my dad (he worked there) showing my brother (Naval Aviation Cadet at the time) the newest aircraft. I sold an autographed publicity photo of Jayne Mansfield and the newest trainer (at the time) for .50 to a high school friend... Wish I hadn't.

Temco and Ling Electronics merged to become Ling Temco and then they got Chance Vought and became Ling Temco Vought....LTV... and my dad survived all that upheaval and retired not long after.

If am correct that Temco Trainer was the TT-1. As I recall we had 14 of them at NAAS Saufley Field being tried out as primary jet trainers.

Thanks for the Navy Base in Texas answer - next thing you know, you'll tell me we have a US prison in Cuba or something... :)

No that isn't called boosting the local economy, that is called foreign aid when they are not in the U.S.
