Nice job on the Bufflehead! I find them some of the most difficult birds to photograph well. The exposure range between the white and black on the head just seems to be so wide as to need HDR to do it justice. The black is irridescent in direct sun which also seems to foul things up with focus, too.
Can I assume you did manual focus? Or did you tape the pins?

I've tried taping the pins and found AF so slow as to be useless.
For those of you who are wondering what we are refering to, the Canon 100-400 will not AF with the Canon 1.4 teleconverter attached. There is a work around that involves putting tape over three of the contact pins that allows it to work.
