Advice please

This photo was taken (with others) with Nikon D200 + Nikon 80-400 VR lens with VR on. Exposure was set to Matrix with Focus set to Single Area (centre). The lens foot was rested on the hide's window ledge. ISO was 640. The day was sunny although this branch was shaded. I was around 8-10 yards away. Most of the bird photos were fuzzy (as is this one). The picture is straight out of the camera, shot in JPEG. Can anyone advise what is going wrong? Is it me (likely!), the lens or the camera? Both have served me well for 5/6 years for wildlife shots.

The iso might be a little high for a sunny day. You said the lens was rested on a window ledge...was the VR switch on the lens turned of? Those are the two things I can think of. Some other people might have more suggestions.

As noted above, VR was ON; even though it was resting on the ledge I still thought it counted as "hand held" so decided to leave it on. Even though it was a sunny day, Programmed Auto still only managed f7.1 at 1/200.

Hi,

According to the photo's EXIF you shot this at 400mm and 1/200 sec. Your shutter speed was most likely too slow to capture optimal sharpness at such a long focal length.

Open up your aperture (with this shot you want the background & foreground soft anyway) which will allow for a faster shutter, with this focal length try to capture the image at 1/400 sec or better if you can.

Hope this helps. 8-)
