Abe's of Maine

I've bought all sorts of things from Abe's of Maine (not in NJ), and it's always been a good experience. A couple of days ago, my son ordered a Nikon P510. Yesterday, Abe's called and asked if he want this, and that, and the other thing. "Would you like an extended warranty?" "Do you want to upgrade the SD card?" A 16GB Class 6 was included with the camera.

Calling and trying to sell more product is a sign of a place I don't want to deal with. Accepting these offers usually gets you an overpriced, low quality item. I hope Abe's isn't going this way. In case you're wondering why he bought from Abe's, they don't charge sales tax for NY. It's only $20+, but it's $20+ and getting nothing in return.

I hear you Jerry! When you order a single item, you expect to get just what you ordered... but... (always a but, eh?)...
on the other hand, I've had that happen where I was happy they suggested a related (and sometimes necessary) item that goes with the original ordered item so I guess one just has to learn to say NO and convince them all you want is what you ordered, eh? (We called it 'associated items sales' when I was in the workforce:o)

I placed an order with Cameta over the phone, and Cathy offered a 3-year warranty that covers physical damage - dropping, for example. It also includes two cleanings. For $70, I think that was worth it.

My son, who's getting the camera, dropped his 18-105mm lens, and then his D40 with 18-55mm lens. The camera was okay, but both lenses were damaged - lens mount on 18-55mm, and I was able to repair that. I'm going to send the 18-105mm to Rick Riggins, and let him fix that one.

In the late 1980s film era I bought a lens for my Nikon at Abe's and they about pressured me to insanity concerning adding stuff like filters, carrying bag, stick-on lens cap string, etc. and even stuff for the camera itself during the call, and then called back before shipping to try again. I never bought there again after that. So it's nothing new.

I guess I'm lucky that happened to me just once.

Sorry to hear this as I thought they were a good source. Guess not. I know this doesn't help Jerry but I guess I'll stick with B&H and Adorama.

Unfortunately I recently had a bad experience with Abe's of Maine as well. I ordered a Nikon lens via the internet on Thursday which was in stock according to their website. On Sunday I received an email requesting I contact them - the email was sent after their customer service was closed for the day. When I called today (Monday) they wanted to talk to me to ensure the order was legimite. They didn't ask any questions to validate who I was - merely proceeded with the sales pitch to sell filters, insurance, etc. I didn't buy any of that - although i did ask for 2 day shipping. Two hours later I get an email that the item is no longer in stock and not available until mid-February. It makes me question how legitimate this company is. Several years ago I purchased Ziess binoculars from them - with no issues. They are a different company today.

if NYS does an audit of Abe's books and finds that you have never paid sales tax, new york has a line which covers the amount of tax. the state is more persistent with the tax.

i haven't dealt with them because they sound like a "shop-in-a-bedroom." i don't think they have much inventory.

When they were in Maine, on Route 1, they had a huge store and sold all sorts of electronic equipment. That's where we got our first 8mm camcorder. I went in to buy a battery for our big VHS camcorder, and the salesman showed me that the barrery weighed the same as an 8mm camcorder.
