Inauspicious start to BIF - they're too far away!

I have been following this forum from the start, and several BIF/BOW regulars before that - all so impressive and just what I would like to achieve. So, off I went to the local reserve for the second time, but those birds are just too far off - I'm cropping soooo hard it's not true! Need an extender I think? Please feel free to advise..

there he is at the end of my 100-400
there he is at the end of my 100-400...

there he is cropped and headless!

..and cropped but at least he's in flight

It takes a lot a patience to get good BIFs and it takes getting to know the birds and their habitats. Talk to local birders and wardens. Talk to whatever the UK's equivalent of our Audubon Society and tell them what you are trying to do. They can be a tremendous source of information. Check out some of Moose Petersen's training videos. Most of all, don't get discouraged. Like any skill, it takes time to master. Keep shooting and keep posting!

I understand your frustration magneto ... I was there once. Now I do exactly what has already bee recommended. Join the local bird club ... ask questions on where to go, what times of the year are the best, etc.

Here's a couple of ideas

Oh yeah ... Always need an extender! Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips Birdpix and Bhowdy - had a look at Moose Petersons website and will spend some time on it, also found there are some birding boat trips around the reserve and harbour so that should lead to some helpful contacts. Currently trying to decide between 1.4x and 2x extender - feel I need the 2x but may be safer with the 1.4....hmmm. Will post when results improve!

Don't forget that with the 100-400 MM Canon you will lose autofocus with either of those extenders. That lens is a great BIF lens and you need to find places where you will be within the lenses reach.
