Hi,

Does the Nikon D70 have optical or digital zoom?

Thanks, Duane.

The D70 is a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera that has interchangeable lenses, which can be zoom or not. No digital zoom. By the way, the D70 is an old model. If you're interested in a reasonably priced Nikon DSLR, look at the D3100 or D5100. Or you could pick up a used D80 for a real nice price.

The "DSLR" NIKON D70 body requires a lens to be attached. These lenses may be optical zoom lenses or prime lenses with one focal length. Digital/Optical zoom lenses are found on "point and shoot" models cameras.

SLR's - as the name says - are burning the image you see thru the lens on to a film or a digital sensor. This is optical zooming. Non SLR's or most photo editing softwares have a "cropping" function. They crop the picture that the lens sees and copy that cropped part onto the film/sensor. This digital zoomed picture contains less information since it represents only part of the total picture. Lower resolution and consequently reduced picture quality is the consequence.

You are correct, the D70 is an "old" model. I am shooting with both, the D70 and the D90. Cannot detect a difference in the quality of the pictures unless I am shooting in very low light.
