St. Helena is a small island; (population currently around 4,300). There are no cities, the capitol of the island is Jamestown. I work on a small passenger cargo ship - named the RMS St. Helena; (RMS standing for Royal Mail Ship) - perhaps the last of it's kind in service. It was built specifically to serve St. Helena; to get people & supplies on off the island as we, as yet do not have an airport, . . though construction on one has commenced - and will hopefully be finished by 2016. Will post a few photos soon.

I see that RMS St Helena was only introduced to service in 1990. I have memories of a previous ship on that route that caught fire in about 1970. I was living in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) at the time and had a parcel being sent from England on that ship. The parcel eventually arrived several months later, to our great astonishment, as we thought it lost for ever.

Wikipedia says that RMS St Helena is due to retire after its present voyage. Is that true?

Enjoy your Christmas off.

Can appreciate the leave time. Spent 10 yrs U.S. Navy. One of my ships was a radar-picket - 30 days out, 14 or so in port unless we had yard work.

Would love to see some street-shots of life on the island if that woudl fit for you, Danny

It is the best place to see this amazing mountain range from. If it works, the attached image was taken at dawn with a steam-power Nikon F in 1972

It's obvious how it got that name. I had never heard of it before.

It's right on the Southern tip of Africa. The city at the base of the mountains is Cape Town, and it's a stunningly beautiful place. On rare occasions a cloud will cover the mountain top and this is known as the 'Table Cloth'

Home - and on leave as of 12 noon today. It's starting to feel just great - after just over 2 hectic months at sea. Didn't have much time to use my D5100 but will post a few "sunsets at sea" pics plus one or two shots of Table Mountain (Capetown) soon.

Cape Town was my home town in a previous life. That's a superb shot, Danny. Thanks for posting it.

Hi to all at UHH, I've just posted a few photos this morning (in the photo Gallery). Had to post 1 at a time because of our slow internet connection here on island.
There are 2 of Table Bay;Capetown, 1 of the old/previous RMS St. Helena - esp for DaveMM, 1 of the current RMS St. Helena - and 1 of a sunset at sea.
Thanks to all of you for the greetings and comments.
