Dix park, Raleigh, NC.
Mid-June, 2024.

The bird was really close (to my 560 mm lens), but completely in the shadows under tree branches and leaves. Thanks to modern sensors and shadow removal capabilities of (raw) editors, a lot of detail could be recovered, but the lack of good lighting is evident in the colors and the washed out sky.

Thank you for the feedback. We have downy, red-bellied and Northern flicker varieties of woodpeckers flitting about these parts for several months. The elusive one is the pileated - still waiting for my first sighting.
