In case you haven't heard, there has been a change in shoplifting. A gang rushes into a store, grabs expensive items, and runs out. Basically, there's no defense against this. Armed guards? Do you want a gunfight in a crowded store? These guys disappear and then sell the items at a discount. Stores are closing as a result. First offenders get a light sentence. If there is no weapon used, that also means a light sentence. Of course, the police must first catch the thieves. People are horrible.

Easy fix , DOUBLE doors at entrance.... push panic button and one locks automatically. Perps are a captive audience !

My son works at Walmart. They've been told that if they see shoplifting in progress, it's now store policy to do absolutely nothing. Apparently it's more cost effective to let shoplifters go, rather than to have an enforcement staff to catch the them (risking a counter suit, of course) then go through the expense of legal action against the perpetrator.

"Cost effective" naturally means the lost value of the stolen property is considered part of the store's overhead and guess who that cost is passed on to?!

Thus is a result of our cultural decline. And it ain't over yet. We have mostly become a secular society with no morals, no fear of God, no ethics and a weak family structure. No great culture in history, once on the decline, has managed to reverse the decline and re-emerge as a great culture. Roman Empire is good example. But at least it took 1000 years. I would not put money betting the USA will last anywhere near that long.
My opinion , but in college I minored in the history of Western civilization. I no longer remember specific date details, but do remember the big picture.

That would be an iffy legal situation with customers. Still, it would probably work - unless the crooks are armed and threaten customers.

As are all the innocent people in the store. What do we do then, send in SWAT teams? Unfortunately not a practical solution.

Better to let them go and not have innocent people hurt.

Virtually all stores tell their people not to confront shoplifters

In my younger days I worked in loss prevention for a major retailer. Found my self confronting three younger females outnumbered, but I ‘won’. Managed to hold all three until law enforcement arrived and took them into custody. A customer commented they shouldn’t be so ruff on those girls. As I stood there bleeding from cuts where my glasses broke, I replied they can defend themselves. What did I win? A ride in the Ambulance to get stitched up and new glasses.

Even when the merchant ‘wins’ the cost can quickly exceed the savings.

Totally agree with you. In the past we had many cycles of civilization and during the centuries they last less and less. The Roman ruled about 1000 years. Then the Frankish and the German kings were involved with the Holy Roman Empire and split their influence over the world for about additional1000 years from 800 to 1860. In the mean time western nations like France, Spain and English established their dominance around the world. Each of these dominance and spread of civilization did not last more that 400/300 years. More recently this western nations influence got shorter and shorter. USA dominance actually started at the beginning of last century. It is very much following the Roman's scheme, but absolutely will not last 1000 years considering the fast evolution of what we call third world nations. Wh**ever will happen, let's work to keep this beautiful nation the beautiful nation we love.

2026 will be 250 years for the US.
Think the "US", as we know/knew it, will make 300???
