If I were you, I would get three colors of seamless paper. Grey, White, Black. You can color the grey with a gel if you like. You can use a digital background that you take for a background. Cheap cloth backgrounds look cheap. A really good canvas background will set you back quite a penny. You can go to your local fabric store and pick up some good quality fabric or order it online. From my experience cheap backdrops from the Backdrop companies don't work very well. Not one shot I took on a cheap fabric background looked good.
Although Green is desirable in video it is not ideal for Photography. Green creates a color cast on a subject which is hard to remove.
I would recommend a stand with the seamless paper.
You can go to B&H(which I recommend) and search on seamless paper. Thunder grey is a good color for the grey paper.

A good source of GOOD backdrops is Denny Mfg., or Silverlake. Backdrop Outlet is OK. But starting out, I would agree with Pale Pictures - White, Black, and Gray seamless can go a long way.

Given enough space you can use a white seamless (paper) background over-lit to be pure white, color gel lit to be most any color for the price of a gel, or black if you avoid light spill on it (that's where the space comes in).
I recently used a gridded small flash with a purple gel to create a purple diagonal streak on an otherwise black background using white seamless.

Good info, thanks Russ.
Where would one go about getting large seamless paper? I don't recall seeing it at any craft stores I've been to in the past, but I must admit that I wasn't specifically looking for that, either.

I went to Hobby Lobby and bought some black cloth, not a good idea.

I like paper backgrounds.
White and black are the prime colors. I also like light blue which can be altered by light intensity, and works like gray in B&W mode.

Check out http://www.backdropexpress.com for seamless background paper, they're located in your state. Once you decide on a color, get some fast dry spray paint in various colors and create your own unique backdrops. Each roll is 36 feet long, so you can have more than one on a roll. Why pay hundred of dollars on backdrops when you can make them yourself.

I get mine from B&H. I shoot in studio almost exclusively on paper. I have mentioned this before but contrary to popular belief white seamless is not a good background to color. Anyone who has ever tried to gel white seamless knows this. White is too reflective. The best two background to gel are grey, or you can shoot through a translucent white. I have both. If you really want to pay for a quality background I would recommend you listen to CaptainC. I like the ones he suggested and I guarantee you he wouldn't be posting if it wasn't from first hand experience. I have had and ordered my share of cheap backgrounds. $30-$100. They are just crap. If you look,at the sight CaptainC suggested you will find these backgrounds are expensive and you will be able to see it in your photographs. I personally am not into producing non quality shots.
As I mentioned earlier seemless paper is better for most people unless your doing this for a living. You buy three quality backdrops that are large and you've bought yourself a good lens.
