My brother was recently at a wedding and he said the photographer would take a picture and it would show up on a laptop he had in the corner of the room. Does this sound familar to anyone and do you know what its called?

Yes, there are a few ways to accomplish this.

A variety of new camera systems, like my D7000, have built-in transmitting capability.

For this, PhasOne has a system called "Capture Pilot" which requires a desktop or notebook computer to have Server Software, and then, you can have your iPad become the picture review device. The iPad app is free, the server is not.

Then, there are wireless systems using WiFi, involving attaching stuff to your camera.

For the Nikon D2, I have the Nikon Wireless Transmitter WT-2A, which requires a trip to the Web to get understandable installation instructions, as the Japanese translation in the Nikon manual is mostly unusable.

Well, there's the Nikonian story...

If your camera uses a SD type card then Eye-Fi makes a SD card with built in wireless file transfer. Google Eye-Fi and check it out.

Also, if you have Adobe Lightroom, then you can use tethered shooting to capture files to your computer. Google Tethered shooting to check it out.

Good luck.
