An interview with Pierce

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I love photography and have been taking picture for over 40 years.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
About 8 years ago I took photography classes and have a degree in photography, I have tried many styles and have not settled on any particular subject yet. During my classes I tried many times to get just the right subject and shot. I have several panning shots of trains and currently a person riding a Harley in the Mojave on my website.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I specifically wanted one with a bird I went with my granddaughter on a school outing to the zoo, and while we were there they had a bird show, which gave me a perfect opportunity. I waited for just the right timing and followed the owl as it took off. I pressed the shutter button and followed through with the panning shot.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I was armed with only my EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT, no special setup.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I don’t think I would change anything, but I do wish the wings had been in the upward motion.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I love to paint and draw, but painting is more costly and time consuming. Even though you need a dedicated studio for painting, with photography, God has given us a great expanse as a studio to work with.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have a website I’m putting together, although it is not finished yet you can view what I have at: http://memoriesndreamsphotography.com

An interview with Peter W

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
On and off about 50 years. My brother bought me a camera (Halina 35mm) back from Malta when he was in the Royal Navy, I was about 14 at the time.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training at all but I read a lot, magazines, books and nowadays web-sites. I am also an active member of a local camera club. I enjoy most types of photoography apart from portraiture but I suppose that is because I don't try hard enough. Despite my advancing years I am still quite shy and so asking people in the street if I can photograph them is very hard, so my street work is quite limited.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
There is only one themed competition at the camera club and this year, what with the Olympics being held in London, it was "Sport". As my daughter lives in SW London and where the cycle road races were being held I thought I'd try to get a picture there.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used a Nikon D300 with, I think, the Nikon 18-200 DX VR lens. I had already photographed the race on its outward leg and been very dissatisfied with the pictures, (too long a shutter speed) and the focus method (I'd left the camera on AF and by the time the focus was achieved with such movement going past, most of the riders had passed). For this one I used manual focus, prefocussing on the white line are of the road and a higher shutter speed, though it was still not high enough to pick out detail in any way.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I'd practise on a circuit so that I could try again as they came round time after time!

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Hill walking so long as they were fairly low ones and had good B&Bs nearby, my days of carrying 25kg of camping gear are over!

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have some on Flickr, I'm signed on as 'Yorkshire Evangelist'

An interview with AlyG

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I got my Canon Rebel 2 yrs ago mainly to take pictures of my granddaughter and vacations.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I've taken 2 classes from local photographers who I admire and I feel they've helped my creativity. I like taking pictures of kids and nature shots.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I think it was the pacifier.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used my Canon Rebel t-2i and a Canon 100mm and a full, sleepy baby,

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
would like to have gotten the entire pacifier in a little sharper focus.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I play piano in a band and really enjoy it! Also, gardening and
travel.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No, just on UHH

Thank you for allowing me to do this, and thank you for the contest!
