Something like 30% of US citizens don't pay federal taxes either. (They either file no income of get back more in benefits than they paid in taxes.) Plenty of them vote though.

It would be interesting to see how a democracy would evolve if only people who pay taxes could vote.

Even better would be to limit it not to all tax payers, but only to those who paid more in taxes than the combined monetary value of all benefits they received over the corresponding time period.

After all, it's only fair that people who pay for government services get to elect the government.

Some can vote and they have no idea for whom or what they are voting for. Some don't have enough to eat on but others complain they don't pay taxes. Some have enough money that they could live off their interest for several lifetimes and yet spend thousands to avoid paying any. Some wish to see programs cut for everybody else but themselves. Some live in their own world and have no idea or care that there is suffering in the world. Some have a myopic view of the world. Some see small injustices and some see larger ones. As to your statement - can't say you are wrong.

i like robert heinliens suggestionn in the sci fi novel "starship troopers" (so much better than that lame movie0. You didn't get citizenship untill you completed a tourr of service in the military. The military had no physical restrictions, if you were blind they would find you a spot, where you couls still serve. The concept was you would not apreciate your rights as a citizen untill you fought for them.

I'm an immgrant to the US and I can't vote in federal elections but I can (and do) vote in my municiple elections.

I also pay taxes to the US gov't, taxation without representation... that's me!

A guest worker system that allowed vetted workers to help with crops is crucial. Here in Washington, apples growers are desperate for pickers. Perhaps healthy people getting unemployment should be required to take these jobs and when the season is over, their checks would resume.

I don't think taxation without representation applies to you since you aren't a citizen. Since you reap the benefits of living here, it's only fair that you chip in.

Require anyone to take a job is one thing - to make them actully perform it you are suggesting what?
Not sure how many apple growers would care to have people around that don't want to be there and can't or won't do the work required, but I'll guess the number may be zero.

It used to be that only white, male, landowners could vote. Since then the restrictions have been loosened, and look what we got. Perhaps a re-thinking is in order..lol

How many out there believe life to be fair?
How many believe life is more like a circus?
How many feel they had a deprived childhood?
How many feel that no one understands them?
How many feel underappreciated.
How many feel that most of lifes
problems are caused by others?
How many feel they have no control
over their own life?
How many feel like hitting me on the
head with a stick?
I get that all of the time.

Yes it applies to me, I pay federal taxes (legally I have to or I wil go to jail and then deported) yet I don't have a say on how my taxes are spent (voting) or any way to deliver my views to my representative in goverment.

I'm not complaining, I like living in TX. I like the lower cost of living here, I like the weather most days. It's the price I pay for not having the desire to become a US citizen.

Sad that my entire family is a military family fight and died for this country and people still using the privileged we have fought for to discriminate and complain. (In a country that except my ancestors the native Americans are true to this place) No matter which way you looked at your ancestors were immigrants looking for a better place to live and something better to offer their families. For those freedom many have lost their life and yet it seems that the rest of us can't make good used of them.

Since you don't want to be a citizen, why would you think that you deserve to vote. I'm not being argumentative - I just can't wrap my brain around the idea. Tourists pay taxes but let's not let them vote. A Saudi citizen (for example) can own property but that doesn't give him voting rights. You get to live here, breathe fairly clean air, drink clean water, drive on highways, get protected by local and federal peace officers. The fact that you mentioned "taxation without representation" implies that there is a complaint. Go figure...

OK, if they don't do the job, they don't get a resumption of unemployment checks.
