Absolutely. One of my sons lives in Port St Lucie. Next time I'm there let's meet somewhere in the middle and have a beer.

If you are criticizing me, that was a heart felt response not a smart alec comment.

No it was not directed at you. It was directed at a previous writer. However if you think that the shoe fits, wear it. Why did you think my comment was directed specifically at you?

I've seen too many other comments from other individuals which were down right rude. They were put downs. You were not one of them.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions without being pounced upon. Negative comments are just not appreciated and are so unnecessary.

Rudeness is all they understand.
They can't comprehend that government is not there to dictate how individuals should live and make choices for them that they should be making for themselves.

SERIOUSLY?????? I'll assume you didn't read that carefully before making such an ignorant comment. For one thing, if Mitt was in favor of segregation, what a great disappointment he would be to his father, who marched with Martin Luther King.

It's not a serious remark but one that is flippant and designed to provoke. The election is over. 8-)

Your response lacks any rational .... consider that to protect its citizens .... it must make and ENFORCE rules ....
rules that you think are burdensome may if fact be a benefit to others in a society .... the government makes rules about clean air .... as a polluter you may think that those rules are an unfair intrustion on your right to dump trash in the ocean .... but you polluting deprives me the right to a clean ocean .... some the question is where rules are concerned ... whoses rights are paramont .... another example .... if I were 30 years old ... I would question why I have to pay into Social Security so that you receive benefits .... that rule maybe unfair to me ... but then there would be no Social Security for you ..... you may be insenced at haveing to pay for health insurance ... but why should I bear some of the cost of your medical care .... I think you have to look at rules from the perspective of how they benefit society as a whole not how they many inconvience you ...

His response was perfectly rational. He stated that the MAIN function of government was to protect it's citizens, he did not say it was the only function. Don't you read the post before attacking it?

As for his comment, Not to rule them, isn't this government designed for rule by the people? He did not mean the government can not make rules. Sheesh.

One of the constitutionally mandated jobs of the federal government is to "promote the general welfare." For me that means making sure I have clean air to breathe and water to drink. It means making sure my food is safe. It means making sure I have health care. It means making sure that I don't live in squalor when I'm too old to work anymore. It means making sure that 10-year olds don't work in sweatshops. It means making sure that everyone has a minimal level of income from their employment. It means making sure that everyone has the right to vote. It means equal pay for equal work. It means that everyone can use the same lunch counters and schools. That to me is a large part of what the federal government is supposed to do.

Do you have any suggestions as to how we will pay for all this?

His father also advocated showing all his taxes, Mitt is not his father. You should also read the history of the Mormon church which did not allow blacks to hold office into the 60s!

That's easy. We continue to run up the national credit card to the point that our creditors refuse more and then we hit a brick wall. I was hoping for suggestions as to how to avoid that.

Everything that you mentioned is "protecting the people of the country" as mentioned earlier. Not to give handouts to people who don't care to help themselves and the government. Remember what JFK said about helping the country..
