It means making sure that 10-year olds don't work in sweatshops. It means making sure that everyone has a minimal level of income from their employment. It means making sure that everyone has the right to vote. It means equal pay for equal work. It means that everyone can use the same lunch counters and schools. That to me is a large part of what the federal government is supposed to do.

The primary function, in my opinion, of any Elected Government is to serve and protect its citizens. Secondly its function is to lead and protect the country as a whole against unwanted external forces. Thirdly it is a Governments to enact laws by which society conducts itself in all aspects of life. Government officials are public servants whom we have elevated to a specific job in the furtherance of the core issues of serve and protect.

SERIOUSLY?????? I'll assume you didn't read that carefully before making such an ignorant comment. For one thing, if Mitt was in favor of segregation, what a great disappointment he would be to his father, who marched with Martin Luther King.

Well said and I agree with you. Where we differ is how to accomplish those goals and to what extent the Government should interfere with our individual liberty and choice in order to "promote the general welfare."

Throughout the history of the world, the function of the government is to do whatever it wants to do. The US Constitution was intended to reverse roles so that the function of the government is to do whatever the people allow it to do.

Since the time of Woodrow Wilson, our government has been in the process of reversing that again.

Actually don and tschmath agree. The role of government is to protect the people. But tschmath further deliniated the meaning of protect.

Now I would like for Don and others of his bent to define rule them.

Take almost any positive characteristic you have to decribe a nation and then put the adjective "unfettered" in front of it.

Generally, government protecting citizens from themselves will result in a "nanny state" - a path we are already on.

Specifically, government protecting citizens from themselves will result in central planning - another path we are already on - and will impoverish us individually and collectively. It will impoverish us financially. It will impoverish us culturally. It will impoverish us intellectually.

It's a long road down and even a longer road back.

I just thought that my first answer was more succinct.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Please don't put down others.
Please don't be rude.
Please don't show your ignorance.
Please be considerate and kind to others.

Smart 'alec' comments are unnecessary and not appreciated.

To uphold the constitution of the United States of America.

What Donrent meant by "NOT to rule them...", and YOU KNEW WHAT HE MEANT, not to oppress its people with laws that burden its people by force. No government is above the law that it imposes. If it is not meant to protect then of what use is it's laws.

You asked a very good question, try not making a game out of it.

I didn't get Don's comment, either. It sounds like a slap at something, but I don't know what.
