I just realized it was June 6th. I remember the date in 44'. I had just turned 7. It was "D-day"!
Thank you brave soldiers. You changed history.
This Sgt. Major was among those who landed at Normandy Beach.

Isn't that your neighbor that recently passed? God bless him.
Seventy nine years ago. That sergeant major is one of a dwindling number of brave Americans from WWII.

You have a good memory. I'm not sure if he passed or moved. He's not here anymore.

You are right, Frank. He had to have been at least 17/18 in 44'. So, he was born in 26' or 27'? He's not here anymore. I'm not sure if he passed or moved.

The "greatest generation".
Thanks Mark...We took a trip to France last year and while there we visited Normandy. Walked Omaha
Beach, took shots, and just envisioned the initial landing and carnage. We don't realize what we owe to
that "Greatest Generation."

I think we do realize what we owe them. We owe them a lot, but I know what you mean. I just think that most of us don't realize what they went through for all of us. My Dad (Purple Heart) and my father-in-law (POW) were both from the "Greatest Generation" (WWII). Both my Dad and father-in-law rarely talked about the war, if at all, and never without a tear. Please today's kids, don't forget them.
The only Marines who landed in Normandy on D-Day, were those who were advisers on amphibious landings. Eisenhower had forbade any Marine units participating. Here's the citation:
https://www.blackfive.net/main/2012/06/where-were-the-marines-on-d-day.htmlIke's reasoning was that Operation Overlord was just too large in scope, compared to anything the Marines had planned or executed in the Pacific. Even the Philippines invasion at Luzon involved only four Army divisions. Normandy involved nine allied divisions, plus a number of smaller-than-division-sized units.
In fact, the Normandy invasion was rather quickly accomplished on 6 June 1944. Utah, Juneau, Sword, and Gold were occupied in fairly short order, and Wichita took the most part of the day, and also drew the most casualties. Even Stephen Ambrose commented that the D-Day landings were overwhelming to the Nazis (owing a lot to their own incompetence).
At Okinawa, the Army landed four divisions while the Marines landed the 1st and 6th MarDivs.

I only know what he told me. We had another veteran who said he was part of the Normandy invasion. At the time, around 2013-14, he was 97 yrs. old. His name was Bill. The Marine's name was Paul.
