I’m in Kauai for a month and always thought (although I would never choose homelessness over being properly housed) that if one was homeless this would be the place. I have seen this guy around the island for years (first in Kilauea, then Lihue and now in Kapa’a. Yesterday I he was slumping over and looked hot so I bought him a cold 24 oz Modelo and a Turkey and cheese sandwich. I sat on the grass talking to him for 20 minutes.

So you are an enabler! Hawaii has a program to provide money for a plane ticket to get "homeless" dirtbags back to their home state. It's an attempt to rid their beaches of jetsom and flotsom.

The best part of being "poor" is that some chump will always pony up the money for a beer and a sandwich.

Something I’ve noticed for years with homeless in down and out people they always seem to have money for cigarettes.

It's such an odd situation because homeless people don't fit a mold. Some are in that situation because they have no other option and some as a result of issues like PTSD while others actually prefer such an "unfettered" lifestyle. If I were this guy who is happy and comfortable living in a paradise like Hawaii, would I want to be returned to a place like South Detroit or the Bronx? There's no one-size-fits-all answer.

You are absolutely correct. Personally, I don’t understand why some people feel it’s necessary to be critical of these street folks who are the least among us in many ways and mostly by circumstances beyond their control. Our character as a society is measured by how we treat those folks.

I'm well aware of that. But why should Hawaii foot the bill for lost revenue due to paying tourists who won't come back to vacation there because they get hassled by those leading an "unfettered" life at others expense?
