Old, Cheap, Good Cameras

I watch a lot of YouTube videos about photography. One subject that comes up fairly often is the old, cheap, very good camera. These presenters say the love, for example, a 2007 Canikon D007D. They said they sell for under $100 and they're great cameras.

They're not $100 - more like $300. For less than $100, they are available for parts. This happens time after time, even with recent videos. How can these guys say the cameras are available at low prices when they aren't? I'm not saying they're lying because they show actual web pages with them available for low prices. The simple answer is that sellers foresee demand after he praised the camera so they raise the price, or people bd higher than they should for an old camera. I've probably seen half a dozen videos praising old, cheap cameras that aren't cheap. It just strikes me as odd.

Hey, even KEH runs email ads that talk about "affordable" Rolleiflex or Rolleichord TLR (120 film) cameras but when I look, all the cameras are either "Ugly" or "Non-Functional" or "For Parts Only". I am only interested in cameras that I can actually use. Well to great functioning used Rolleis cost usually $ thousands.

It is so annoying the tricks advertisers do to create click-bait.

I agree, it is annoying, but unfortunately it works.

There are no cheap good old cameras. In the used market, cheap and good are incompatible.

I have a Topcom Super D with three lenses, and many of the film Nikon film cameras. Also a half-frame Canon in working condition and a Signature Kodak that was my grandfather's.

Jerry, Last year I bought a used Nikon D7000 camera body from MPB for $279. It was in excellent condition with moderate shutter count. It was a great value. Today, the price is around $200. This for a working condition camera, not one for parts.

I have (too) many old 35mm camera stored in my closet. I know there must be someone out there
that still uses older film cameras and would love to get their hands on "parts" from these old film cameras.
After moving on to digital photography, I now realize that, even these digital devices will fail to do the job they were designed to do. My first digital, has already lost it's ability to "auto focus".
At 75 years old, my eyesight isn't what it used to be, and manual focusing is not my first love.

Yes, all cameras have a birthday and a date of burial. I just need to get over it.
Enjoy them while they still function.

Maybe the prices were low when the article was written, but then when the article was widely read the laws of supply and demand drove the price up.

Years ago I bought an older Nikon lens relatively cheap. Solid quality and I was surprised that no one payed attention to it. Couple years later the price almost tripled……🤷🏼‍♂️
