Hello All
I have just returned from a trip around the world and took about 12,000 photos with the Sony DSC-RX10 IV.
My next trip is in July to Iceland, Greenland, Norway, UK and I think it is time for an upgrade.
While the Sony is a great camera I found myself wishing for the features that some of the other travelers had in newer cameras. Specifically better connectivity, Newer/bigger sensor, improved autofocus/eye detection, Built In ND Filter, Live Composite Mode, Focus Bracketing, Focus Stacking, better IBIS and frankly better better IQ a lot of the time.
I typically do handheld bird, wildlife, landscape and street photography, really no portraits or indoor. iPhone seems to take care of indoor pretty well anyhow. I really want as small a rig as possible.
So a ton of research has gotten me to the OM System OM-1, it appears to check all my boxes.
I am thinking about the 12-200 Lens as it seems to be a great choice for travel. I am also considering as an alternative the 12 - 100 Pro with the 75-300 for more reach. But then there are lens changes in the field.
My DW has given me a 5k budget for this
My main question is am I going to see a large improvement in IQ with the OM-1?
Other Thoughts? Other alternatives?
If you had 5k to buy a kit that you would take way up north, what would you buy?
A couple of my favorites from the trip attached
Thanks in advance!
Cheers
Daryl
Haha... I'd probably get a 5D-IV and a 24-105L.
But that's me.
You get what you want.

Excellent choice except for wildlife for which you could add a 100-400L II. But not exactly small or light. For I small kit I would look at the new Fujifilm X-T5.
You won't go wrong with an OM1. My 12-100 Pro has been my go to on many trips, and basically lives on my camera. But the choice is yours, There's something to be said for the all in one super zooms, but if you're concern is IQ, stick withthe 12-100. How many shots do you take where you need the extra reach? Is 200mm enough, or do you need 300? (Taking into account the 2Xcrop factor?)

OM1 will check ALL the boxes... biggest being incredible stabilization hand held.
Thank you all
I do a lot of bif from boats/ships so both reach and stabilization are very important. I like what I read about the 12 - 100 pro, but I worry that would not be enough reach. That thought process is what led me to the 12-200 thinking it could be a do-it-all for me.
Perhaps the 12-100 pro and a longer lens (75-300) would be better.
Cheers

My main interest is not wildlife, but it's good to know if I ever decide to do that.
I wouldn't.....

There you go, answered your own question, OM-1, 12-100, 75-300. Add them up....<$5K?, go for it!
My Olympus OM5 II with the 12-100 lens has been to Europe three times with me and all over the US. The combination never lets me down.
Get the Sony RX-1. You have the chance to spend good money for see how less is really more.
The OM-1 paired with the Olympus 12-100 f4 is a great travel kit. My wife used a G9 last year with this lens in Iceland, The Faroe Islands and a small ship cruise from Malta to Venice. She loved it but now also has the OM-1 & the Panasonic Leica 100-400 so she can cover the range of 24-800mm equiv in a 66 oz kit and that includes the OM-1. At current new prices that only costs $4500 plus tax. I used my PL 50-200mm f2.8-4 with a TC1.4 to reach 560mm @ f5.6 and it worked well on the G9 but not for BIF and I found 560mm just a tad short at times. The nice thing about the PL 50-200 and TC is it only weighs 28 oz and was very useful for water falls and general landscape photography in that setting. I now also have the OM-1 to rectify the BIF issue. If you are curious how her 12-100 did have a look at her YouTube channel @lesdubb and choose the Iceland tour videos. I would also take a small fast prime also for night shots. Happy Trails and good luck.

Hello All br br I have just returned from a trip ... (
show quote)
Firstly, beating the overall quality/versatility of the RX10 - especially the LENS - is a fools errand - at least for NOW !
. IMO, you would be further ahead by investing in and learning some AI softwares for improved PP of the RX10 output. Sadly, the camera you seek does not yet exist ! - a M4/3 with a ZEISS 12-300 f3.3-5 - which I estimate could be done for $2400 ! - and, of course it would be larger/heavier than RX10 - But, an RX10mV is being rumored ! - after all, it is 6 years old now. 8-)

I have the 12-100 f4 and the 40-150 f4 on the OM-1 . . . awesome setup. . . . you cant go wrong.
Rent your camera rig of choice and see how it really stacks up. That way you can be sure.
