1. Don't forget the free software offered by your camera manufacturer. Nikon and Olympus Software is quite easy and suitable for many raw development tasks.

2. Corel Paintshop Pro is a rather good program but is more comparable to Photoshop than its is to Lightroom. The latest version does however contain a better RAW development tool.

Photoshop Elements or Luminar Neo - download trial versions of both to see how you like them. Elements gets your foot into the Adobe universe, while Neo is exceptionally easy to use.

After many, many years of Photoshop and Corel and a few others I have settled on PhotoShop Elements. Over the years I started to spend more time processing than actually shooting. Once I retired and could spend more time shooting, I realized it was more fun using a camera than a computer.

Elements gives me most of what I want, and everything I actually need.

I especially like Elements 9 simplicity over later versions with all their bells and whistles !
If you shoot JPEG only like I do, it greatly simplifies your PP. Older versions of Elements are available on ebay.

The basics of Lightroom Classic are not that complicated and don't have a "big learning curve". I enjoy it so much that it would be wrong if I didn't recommend it.

Agreed. It's a HUB of the digital workflow. Everything else in my toolset is a spoke.

Photoshop Elements. It has three editing modes - Quick, Guided, and Advanced - with a strong data base Organizer to keep track of and set categories and tags for you photos.

Affinity Photo. No subscription. Less than $50 to purchase one time. Automatic updates. Very comprehensive. Steep learning curve, like Photoshop.

Do you use the Lightroom Classic Library module to manage your video clips?

No. Most of our video projects are 64GB to half a Terabyte. They are kept on paper-indexed hard drives. Individual clips are managed in Final Cut Pro projects.

I think the trial is only a week or two. The 30 day part is the money back guarantee period starting from when you send them money. If you buy direct from Adobe via download, you can get your money back for 30 days. If you buy from a retailer, it is between you and the retailer.

I gave no money or even a card number too them. It downloaded and works fine. After 30 days it stops working and if I want to continue I hit buy and it's $99 right now

My understanding is that Lightroom's marketing target is for pros who process large batches of photos at a time and need 16 bit processing to produce high quality edits for their prints. It doesn’t have an easy learning curve.

Affinity.
There are also other Serif editors (now legacy products) which I have and still use - worth a look and are still available (latest is not always best).

Somebody once told me:
Never take authority when you can have fact;
Never guess when you can know.

Discover Photoshop Elements 2023.

Take your pics to new places! Add motion to specific parts of your photo, frame your subject with peek-through overlays, brush on fun new patterns, and more!

Start with a free 30-day trial.
