Sony is the only company that runs a cellphone line and a camera line.

Well...it is fair to say...Sony runs the cellphone market pretty much.

It may say Apple on the outside...but it's got Sony inside every one of them.

Sony makes coin from all directions...everyone in the game...buys from Sony at some point.

Nobody has said you should stop lugging around that lens, just that Nikon should stay out of the phone business.

I think that ship has sailed. While I prefer to refer to them as "communicating cameras," the fact remains that these are telephones, that just happen to have cameras built into them, as well as myriad other features. Nikon, et al, would have to compete with Apple and Samsung on every front, not just on camera technology.

Given how good the Iphone camera has become are any of the major companies like Nikon or Sony thinking of producing their own model ?
It would probably be better and it might get back customers, like me, who put their DSLRs in the drawer.

It is Ok that you don't like photography very much.

Cellphones are rather poor cameras, telephones and computers but they are portable. Many years ago lots of folks were happy with their Instamatic cameras, too. My cell phone is off 90% of the time it is no pleasure to use. Even a rather small simple camera is more satisfying to use.

Am I correct in thinking your 600 f4 lens cost about $8,000 second hand?

Anyhoo Bill, I shot the below with one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/224805933538?

The darn bandit was filching the "cones" off my pencil pine.
The ones the correllas drop on the carport roof block its spouting.

Because he doesn't feel the same way you do, he doesn't like photography very much?
I use my cameras, including my cell, as a tool to acquire images. Each device works differently and has different ergonomics. Do I prefer one over the other? Yes. Do I disregard the others? No.
So I suppose I don't like photography much either.
Some people are in a relationship with their camera(s).
I'm not.

I was happy with an Instamatic back when I was in college; I was very unhappy when its shutter broke. The photos I take with this iPhone are satisfying; they would be as satisfying to me as those I take with a “real camera” if the lens zoomed. The results are typically what give me pleasure.

Back to the point of this thread, Nikon does what satisfies people; it is unlikely they could master all the aspects that would be necessary to make a tolerable cell phone.

They started out as telephones but soon morphed into devices with multiple functions. Those other functions are often more popular than the telephone feature, especially texting because it requires less signal strength than a voice call while avoiding more personal contact than a voice call requires.

and is ‘asynchronous’ {all parties don’t have to be attached at the same time}

Less signal strength????
The signal still has to reach the tower(s) in either case.
Just different information on the carrier signal that is transmitted.
Same signal power going out.

Signal strength tends to be shown in ‘bars’. Having just a few bars, makes understanding the other person hard, but your phone will keep sending a text message until it gets through {or it reaches its limit}

The "signal bars" are indicating the tower signal strength getting to your phone, not the amount of power your phone is putting out.....

Let’s try this again.
If tower signal is low, phone communication struggles. Text will repeat until message gets thru or limit has been reached.

None of this relates to the fact that Nikon would have to spend money to learn new technology and gain customers in unfamiliar ‘territory’.

Just think how silly we'd look holding our DSLR up to our ear.

I hesitate to make voice notes on my cameras because of that.

Just write your notes on a note pad and photograph them. That should get you a lot more comfortable with voice notes !
