I ordered one to be my second body on outings…it's usually easier to pick up the second body than swap the lens. When I got the Z9 I kept my Z7II to do this with…but between the user modes vs shooting banks and the significantly worse performance in AF with the Z7II for action I ended up choosing to leave it behind and switch lenses. I mostly shoot wildlife and waterfalls/landscapes…and the Z7Ii is excellent for the latter and for a light travel rig when photos aren't the priority…but the Z8 is actually the body I wanted to begin with over the Z9 as I have zero interest in a grip or gripped body…but I wanted the AF and FPS so I got the Z9 anyway. Once the Z8 gets here it will go on hikes/outings either with the Z9 or instead of the Z9 depending on length of hike, weight, heat, and all the other factors. Not sure if I will keep the Z7II for a light travel rig, will depend on whether I decide the Z8 meets that requirement for me as well.

I watched some reviews of the Z8 on YouTube. That looks like a winner - a smaller Z9, with some advantages over it, but at a lower price. If only the price was lower.

It has Airplanes Mode. I wonder if that would work equally well for birds. Apparently the Z8 isn't available to the general public yet, but I bet it will sell out quickly.

Hi Jerry41,

I'll let you know how it turns out when I get mine. Being part of NPS I hope to get mine soon.

It would be interesting to know how the distribution system works. Does B&H receive a thousand Z8 bodies? What about Adorama and the camera stores all over the world? I'm glad I'm not in charge of distribution.

I was offered a Z8 when they first came out being a member of NPS. I didn’t take the offer right away because I wanted to wait and see some of the reviews. It seems the reviews have been positive. I purchased mine from Nikon. I have no idea how many they got. I purchased it with the 24mm to 120mm lens.

NikonRumors reported yesterday that delays are expected...I guess after the original stock is depleted.

I believe that came from Nikon.

The 200-600mm zoom is expected next, perhaps in a couple of months. It may also actually be a 180-600mm with variable aperture.

I will be stepping up to a 200-600 ASAP.

My son-in-laws Grandmother just ordered a Z8 with kit lens through Amazon. Curious to see how this plays out. They say it is a USA version. I warned her about grey market.

If I live that long, I'll wait five years and get the Z8II or a Z8 refurb or used. 😋

Typically all Japanese new models are released in Asia and Europe before their release in North America, so Asia and EU folks have already had them in their hands for awhile, as well as testers/reviewers.

B&H, Adorama and all authorized dealers will receive an allotment from Nikon. Nikon will partly base that allotment on previous model sales by that dealer, but the actual number B&H, Adorama, or any authorized dealer gets is greatly influenced by supply at the time, and that changes. But NO authorized dealer goes without at least some cameras allotted in the first USA shipment. I know this from dealer owners that I have known personally for decades.

NPS folks are afforded the opportunity to get priority status at their dealer of choice. But an owner of a top dealership I know, says he wont bypass any earlier pre-orders from his other regular and loyal customers. Nikon really leaves it up to the dealer for final pecking order.

Cheers and best to you.

So do I, but I don't have that much in my coin jar. Paying that off over a year would cost me $333 a month, and that's not counting interest. I have my D750, Z6II and Z fc. I'm not a professional, and that's already too much camera gear for me.

Trade in two cameras and get a huge down payment on the Z8. I traded in my D850 and a few lenses never used anymore and BAM I walked out with the Z9. The Z9 and Z8 have animal eye detection. Mine will capture the birds eye.

Wish I had the funds to purchase a Z8 and some Z glass but not in the cards. Or the bank account either!

The Z8 is the D850 and the D6 with much more punch. My reading of the tech specs is that the Z8 is a light weight Z9. I injured my right shoulder and hoping the lighter Z8 would allow me to take a few more pictures when out shooting.

Not sure how much the difference in weight would make, given how heavy good lenses (especially the long ones) are. I have both shoulder and back issues but the two-pound difference alone isn't enough to make me give up my D850.

Also note that DXO rates the D850 sensor above that of the Z7s and Z9s. It's the highest ranking Nikon (and above all the Canons and Sonys currently covered).

I'm thinking that, if I decide to go mirrorless, I'll ditch my 50 years of Nikon usage and cameras and seriously consider the latest 60.1 megapixel Sony, which is $1,400 less than the Z9 and with at least as many useful features, as well as the higher resolution.

Actually it is 61mp sensor in the Sony A7RIV, A7RIVa, A7RV. I have had the A7RIV since it first came out in 2019. It has stunning image quality, resolution and detail.

No knock on the excellent 45mp stacked sensor in the Nikon Z9 and Z8 (sensor made by Sony, BTW). And the 45mp sensor in the D850 is also made by Sony.

Cheers and best to you.
