I had had some time before the game I was there to shoot so I decided to challenge myself. I pulled out the 300mm set the camera to single shot to see what I could get. all photos are: Canon EOS-1D X, 1/1250, f/ 3.2, 300 mm

That last shot is the gold medal winner in this very fine set.
I have the same gear, but sitting courtside, felt it would be to close to follow the action.

It really was too close for the 300. It was fine if when the play was at the far end of the court but then it also somewhat limited the ability to get faces in the shots. I did it more as an exercise to clean up some sloppy habits that I was getting into with the 70-200, which I brought out when the team I was there to cover played their game.

For the dramatic shots sitting court side is where you want to be in my opinion. Actually I shoot a lot of the time under the basket for those layups or drives to the basket.

I do also. In tight quarters I’ll sometimes go with a 50 but I normally use an 85. Wide open you get an extra stop & you don’t have to monkey around zooming. I also have a 135 F2.0 prime that I’ll use in venues that have that balcony indoor track.

That is a great lens 135mm 2.0 wish I had one. I will have to stick with the 24-70 2.8 or 50mm 1.8 for under the basket.
