You didn't mention when you were going? Remember it is still winter to the first part of June in parts of the park and winter starts mid-September.
The ice was just starting to break up on Maligne Lake in June but it made for some interesting pictures.

Thanks for kind comments and sharing thoughts on our neighbors to the North. From craggy peaks to prairie and shining shores, Canada is a special place in my heart. I've been fortunate to have seen much of Canada over the last 60 years in many seasons with camera, fishing poles and friends.

Every time I visit the Columbia Icefields it makes me feel very old. The marker showing the toe of glacier the year I was born is just behind that pile of gravel in the left of center foreground. The toe has moved a whole lot in 75 years!! bwa
Just had a look at google maps. Aerial photo taken this year (2023) and it's got to be close to a mile back now. And that's in Winter.

If you hike, check out the Plain of Six Glaciers and Sentinel Pass hikes. Also, go up the Jasper Sky Tram and hike from where it lets you off at the top.

Not all that long ago they couldn't build the current highway because the glacier covered the route! And at present the glacier is retreating at about 5m (16') per year.
