Have you re-used the external drive?
How did you transfer the files to your main computer?
Can you change the extension from .tmp to .jpg and view it with anything other than PE?

If you simply copy photos to your computer, RAM is not an issue. However, if you use programs that catalog as they go, it can be if the program/computer doesn't manage memory well. I use the manufacturer's (Canon) program (EOS Utility) to copy photos to computer before I ever look at them with an editor. I have used Windows Explorer to transfer thousands of photos (copy, paste) at one time on my old Win 7 PC without an issue.

Even simpler, there is no need to rename the files or change them in any was. You can right click on the .tmp file and click "Open with" in the context menu.

Thank you, Jimmy T.

If I remember correctly someone here on UHH stated that was how they used the second slot and I liked the idea.

In retrospect, all the comments make sense. My computer is starved for memory. Not all the photos were converted to tmp. The first 150 or so were not converted. So I suspect that the computer processed the first 150 and then said "whoa" I can't handle all of this and converted the rest to tmp. My camera is Canon 5Diii which I got a week before my trip. I didn't realize it had 2 card slots until after the trip and I started going through the 400-page owner's manual. My computer is a Lenovo M70Q with 8GB Memory and 256GB SSD drive running Windows 11. I have a 1TB aux drive where I keep most photos. No wonder I keep getting memory-full messages. I have ordered an additional 8GB memory card and a 1TB internal drive. I will let IBM do the installation.
