In 1953 (or so) would you have paid $3000 for this Tucker? Even today would you make a $33,000 investment hoping that the Tucker would appreciate? I remember looking in an "early" Hemmings and seeing a "Dino" Ferrari selling for $1200, today they're going for $500,000 (give or take):) You just never know. Presently certain Mustangs are selling for outrageous amounts.

Early 50's

Tucker had a nice car but bad breaks. Prices of old cars are ridiculous, but people are willing to pay. Car prices were lower in the 1950s, but so were salaries. I've seen movies in which people traveled to the past and took advantage of the low prices. If only.

In todays market $3,0000has the equivalent buying power of $33,802 and cars are only worth what people are willing to pay for them.

In 1959 pharmacists earned $4.00/hour and a 1956 Ford hardtop Victoria was under $3000.

I bought a new 1969 Jeep with a Fisher plow for $3,200. I think the plow would cost that much today.

EDIT: No, more like $1,650 for the plow.

Wow! Things have changed! The Jeep Wrangler - formerly the CJ5 - is 4-door only, and the starting price is $55,000. For any color but white, add $495. Hardtop - $3,800.

Went out to buy a new Yukon XL- starting price was $81,000. Walt Disney must be doing the pricing from Disney land

Did you ever hear of a car company in PA called Reedman? It's a one-stop-shop. We bought a 1976 Chrysler Cordoba there. You pick out the car and drive it around their large test track. They arrange the financing, registration, insurance, and put a plate on it. They you drive it home. At your convenience, you arrange your own insurance and register it locally. I think my parents bought a car there, too.

I remember how in 1980, the average price for a new car was $10,000, and I thought that was very high. My 2015 Fit cost about $21,000, and it's averaged 43 mpg for 78,000 miles. I'm satisfied.

My '73 Nova was $2650; it was a 2-door, with 350 V8, Muncie 3-speed-on-the-floor trans, baby moon hubcaps and an AM radio. And nothing else, not even rubber floormats. But it'd go like a striped-assed Ape...

The Motor Trend channel will televise the Mecum Auto Auction several times during the year. I can't believe how much those old cars will sell for.
