Before I retired I always had a little trick up my sleeve with bosses. When they had a few of us working on a project the boss would call and ask me about how soon we were going to be done, and I would say, oh, we've still got a lot of work to do. It will take hours. Then, about an hour later I would call the boss and say, "we're done." The whole idea is to make them think that it will take all this time and then when we got it done it would make us look good. I think that is what is going on with some companies. They will tell you it takes longer than it takes, then when you get it you are really happy.

As far as the idea presented above about pressure on drivers to get it done quickly. I think that is definitely correct. The people who get the job done quickest are rewarded, and they ask everybody else, "why can't you be that way?"

It is just the way human nature is.

Two guys I worked with gave me odd advice. One said that if you showed you couldn't do an unpleasant job, the boss would assign it to someone else. The other guy was always being asked to solve computer problems. This was before the days of a dedicated IT department. His advice was, "Solve their problem, but don't explain how you did it. That way, they'll continue to need you." I didn't take either bit of advice.

When I was in the Navy I was asked to paint some bulkheads. But when I did there were runs all over the bulkhead which got me into a little bit of trouble. But whenever they asked me to paint again, I would remind them of what had happened before, and I always got out of the job. But that was just luck. I wouldn't recommend it either.
