Good question! Cheap labor? What ever the reason was, they made a whole lotta great guitars.

One of the best sounding guitars I ever owned, was a J45 deluxe. Bought it in the 60's.

From the web link: Built in 1917, the Gibson Factory there created some of the most iconic guitars ever made. But beyond the instruments, the factory was also home to the “Kalamazoo Gals,” a group of over 200 women who kept the guitar manufacturer going during World War II.

Epiphone was a respected Kalamazoo guitar maker as well. Gibson bought Epi as an budget-Gibson company. There's not much 'build quality' difference between the two. The guitar in the pic was AUD$299 ... with a bound fingerboard!! That was three years ago, they're around $350 now. I added a pick guard to Les Paul-it-up a bit.

The factory is still there. When Gibson moved to Nashville in the 1980’s not everyone wanted to go:

I’ve been there on their tour several times and played their guitars, fantastic instruments.
