Ok Hoggers, I'm not a pro but I have sold a few prints. I'm currently without a large format printer and would like to get a new one. I would like one that will print up to 13"x19". Of course larger would be ok too depending on operating cost. The last large format printer I had was the Pixma Pro 100. I don't really want to go back to a cartridge type and would rather go with a tank type ink system. I have been looking at the Epson 8550 and it interest me but I have heard a few mention having trouble with it. Do any of you have experience with it?
I'm not a cheapskate but I'm not loaded either so I would like to keep the cost around a thousand bucks or so.
I have looked at pigment type and dye type and while I would rather go with pigment I don't believe the cost of ink for a pigment printer is practical for me. If someone can educate me more on that I would appreciate it. In fairness to any prospective buyer I do think about the longevity of pigment vs dye.
This printer would be dedicated for photo printing alone as I have printers for other printing needs.
I know it is ultimately my decision but I would greatly appreciate any helpful input.

I had purchased when the supply chain opened up one and enjoy it. No cartridges is a blessing. the prints are good and and respond well to my Lightroom Classic program. Setup was easy and having the front screen on the printer sure helps. Two things about printing 19" the feed is on the back for that size and I would not print borderless it uses more ink and excess will spill over the the pads what will catch the excess.

This is almost more of an ethical dilemma than technical. If you selling prints, longevity is important. Using Canon's suggestions, pigment ink lasts around three times longer than dye ink. I think there are only two choices in the 13 x 19 size! Both use cartridges.

If you sell prints from the dye ink Epson 8550, are you obliged to tell the customer that the prints have a shorter than optimal life?

Maybe so, as well as not to place in a well lit area such as direct sun etc. My thinking too.

Thank you.

For my own printing, I continue to use my Canon Pro-100 and will as long as it continues to work. I hang about a half dozen prints on my walls and change them out if and when I get new "wall hangers". I count as 'elderly' so the dye ink prints will last a lot longer than I will!

I am in full agreement with you. I also print with a Canon Pro 100 and have owned it for approximately 8 years, it has never given me any issues at all and there are times that I don’t print for a month or two. As far as cost of printing, I keep a full set of cartridges on hand and when a cartridge goes empty, I install from the extra set and then order a replacement cartridge to keep my extras at full set. I am NOT a believer of compatible inks, so never use them, only OEM carts.
I do sell prints on occasion but mostly print wall hangars for my office/man cave. It’s doubtful anyone that buys a print from me ever plans to keep it hanging on a wall for 100 years so that is not an issue for me either.

I use a Canon PIXMA 8720 that works for me and goes up to 13" x19".

If you can stretch your budget a bit I would look into the Canon Pro-1000. It has phenomenal print quality and uses pigment ink. The larger ink cartridges also lower the cost per print. Highly recommend.

I purchased the Canon Pixma Pro 200 about a month ago. It prints magnificent photos up to 13x19.
It uses 8 pigment cartridges. I just bought a set of 8 from B&H for about $105. Individual cartridges are about $14.
I also considered the 8550, but when I compared photographs, the Pro 200 looked better.
The printer lists for about $600.
You can also download Canon’s Print and Layout software, which interfaces with my Photoshop Elements, and other editing software.

Thanks, that is one to consider but according to Canon it uses dye based ink. I would like to get away from cartridges if I go with dye base.

Of course. My bad.
It still prints magnificent photos.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

The estimated 100 year life of Epson Claria inks is still double to triple the known life of silver halide wet process papers used by traditional labs. Canon's own photo dye inks offer similar longevity.

All bets are off if you use third party inks!

A cartridge type isn't out of the question. The ink compared to pigment is still cheaper. I liked my Pro-100 but it seemed like everytime I turned around I was having to order ink.
