It certainly doesn't stand for Get And Shoot.
There are still plenty of self-styled photographers who slobber over the likes of AA - who did Get And Shoot, without GAS.

I think GAS is a sign to tooooo many beans...
I get bad GAS, I’m old enough to have:
“taken every picture”,
these cold cloudy daze leave little of beauty to be captured
Perhaps a __________would spin these maudlin daze anew…
Yet my new precious_________leaves me frustrated.
Perhaps I try another
“My pictures suck”
Bland and unstructured, if you can’t make it good make it red
If you can’t make it red make it big
My New camera will make my pictures better, lost horizons now colored over bright
I'm still trying to understand why folks thinks GAS is such big deal. Sure, some folks go overboard chasing the next best thing.
On the other hand, if no one buys the next version of a camera or lens, The Nikons, Canons, Fujis, OM Systems, etc will find the camera business unprofitable and potentially cease development of new models and features. I'm certainly not saying that we should always rush to purchase the latest, but there has to be a viable market for companies to remain in business.
JFC**pe understands it, if improvements, real or perceived, for upgrades worthy of moving up, thus acquisition.
The digital revolution in cameras could not have happened without GAS.

GAS is for plebeians.
If you have the money, it's not GAS.
If you don't have the money, it's GAS.

I did say ex wife
Yup, you *did* say "ex" !
In order to succeed, we must believe the best equipment matters most.

Very agreed, but you left out something good ... how it supplies inventory for the used fear market that some of us really depend on :-)
All those buyers of the "next best thing" provide late model "previous best things" for us who appreciate that. So, spend away, all youse gassers ! And market madly, all youse manufacturors.

Define "The Best"?
In photography "The Best" must depend on that which makes for "The Best" photographs in the eyes of the beholder? Your "Best" might not be my "Best". So we are left unable to determine, within our world of photography, what is "The Best".
There's a load of rubbage been published here - I think we all need to get back to shooting the shoot, rather than talking the talk! So let's do it.
If you buy the latest camera how long is it still the latest?
Seems new technology filters down to lower cameras pretty quick.
When new models come out the old latest and greatest still work the same
Photography is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you have to buy the best equipment.

When you buy the latest equipment it's replacement is already off the bench and in the marketing department.
It's hardwired into our fabric of being since the dawn of humans for our survival depended on "hunting and gathering". We have become creatures that covet and for those who may be in doubt, "Do you own any jewelry whatsoever?", and if so, what do you do with it? At least with owning a camera, the possibilities are only limited by our imagination.
