A Beautiful Conversion Victim For Surgery Nikon 1 J1

Instead of being boring I will write this in film noir chapters; technical is at times so dry. Please let me know if it is interesting.

CHAPTER 1 CHOICE OF THE VICTIM AND HER DESCRIPTION... NAME, NIKON 1 J1 DSLR

My victim was chosen by some motivation I do not exactly recall. But regardless I found her and she fit the basic character of my previous victims… she is mine for a few dollars and was easy to kill by battery removal and disassembled easily with a lo-cost too set. Unlike Dr Frankenstein some previous reassembles were not successful. One Fuji and one Panasonic were stone cold dead. My previous pride is a Panasonic small sensor camera, alive and well and will give excellent full spectra IR photos.

Having more important uses of my time, makes a great motivator for doing an not needed project in the name of a why-not-challenge. I think I met her in a random resell company at a piece less than one hundred. Never heard of her and why so low cost. Many YouTube videos demonstrated how to but the mislead me with apparent simplicity. While I envisioned a one-night stand, she, a bit complicated, required that I devote an entire weekend.

Her family, the well revered Nikon dynasty, shouts high-class technology. Nikon 1 J1 was her name, few who knew her family had ever heard of her, certainly not me, few cared being focused on full sensor high pixel expensive cousins. Even Nikon Trailer-Trash point and shoots are expensive; unique she was neither. She was not vain like many of her family, she had no mirror… she was mirrorless. I did not realize that mirrorless was a virtue I would love. She focused within her sensor with a ultra-fast hybrid auto-focus, but allows manual manipulation. and could not care less if you warmed her by removing the IR hot filter and would be sharper in memory with her anti-aliasing, optical low-pass filter removed; it was rare for her to give a moire dancing image. The blueish thick anti-aliasing filter confused and softened her images as it does for others. Her relatives the D800 and D800E are twins but one, the E born with out anti-aliasing; known for being sharper of the two.

Unlike most of her family, she had a tight fitting 1” sensor and a wardrobe of three unique lenses that only fit her, 10mm, 10-30mm, and 30-110 mm. She was a bit odd, with 40.5mm filter threads. Sun filters at 40.5 are odd, but a simple threaded upgrade to 52mm quickly and economically solved that problem. Ahead of her time in many ways; not popular and a bit weak at 10 mpix she was abandoned by the head of her family in 2011 and so on the street at distressed prices; like a lady of the night, you could buy her body alone. With an adapter she is willing to take a wide range of lenses, even the old as the hills Minolta AF lenses, tho with them she focuses on manual manipulation. In 2015 1" superzooms were introduced by Sony and Panasonic became popular... Nikon 1 J1 was born too soon she was small but not a true compact. The considering the bulk of interchangeable lenses, only when equipped with the 10 mm lens could she snuggle in your pocket.

I hope this film noir description has intrigued you more chapters with details and reference will follow. We will hear of the 2mm plastic focus drive gear that caused the lenses to fail and killed Nikon 1 reputation. We will discuss take apart and my modification of the typical DIY directions.

Very clever!

I am assuming the operation was successful and the patient lived.

Using Motorola AF lenses requires an adapter that can control the aperture since these lenses like to stop down all the way when not controlled. I prefer to use the manual focus Minolta Rokkor lenses that have a aperture ring.

Post some results with this newly modified camera. The 10M pixels won't affect the results too much unless you like to crop a lot. I use my IR modified Olympus EM5ii which is 16M pixels and seems plenty sufficient for IR photography.

I did have to do an internet search as I could not remember this Nikon 1 J1 camera. Should produce great results.

Yes, Jim, successful, in Chapter 2 I show the sensor parts and discuss the effects of removing each and how to replace with simple glass microscope slide. Thank you for doing a read and asking.

Following the myth that sensors are don't-touch-tender, I did not clean the sensor... static electricity causes accumulate dust... so will be taking the camera apart again to remove any dust that has sneaked in... frustrating but necessary...and by now I can dis-assemble and assemble the camera quickly. I took a lot of time trying to use a coated filter and so the sensor was exposed for a day... a no no!!

Sensor cleaning is fine, reality is, there a tough hard glass sealed on top of the actual Bayer and the monochromatic CCD (charge coupled device) or CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensors.

So next time I reassemble I will use almost clean-room conditions. once the glass slide and plastic support are in place then we can easily reach the outer part of the glass slide. I experimented with cutting a coated filter, but they are thick and scratch easily when holding and cutting. Microscope slides are correct width only require one simple cross cut... if you screw up you have 99 more slides in the box! After cleaning there are only 4 screws to put the slide glass assembly in place that can be quick.

Literature says you only lose ~8% of the light if there is no coating; not a problem. "Plain uncoated glass passes through about 96% of light and reflects back 4%. It does this at both surfaces so if you shine a light through a flat piece of uncoated glass, about 92% of the light passes through."

As requested here is a photo taken with the Nikon 1 J1 IR modification. I believe it is a 520nm filter. Note that sharp UFOs in the sky... that indicates the dust to be on the protective sealed glass surface of the sensor assembly.

The photo shows that the camera is small.

The edge view shows that there is a glass cover sealed to sensor assembly .... typical assembly is shown

You are correct about the glass hardness of the sensor. And for one particular cleaning I did, I used a digital microscope to view the top of the sensor while I cleaned it while watching on the computer monitor. I could see every speck.

Next, you will eventually decide what your favorite lens is to use with that modified camera.

In my case with the Olympus EM5ii, it didn't take long to settle on using the small 14-42mm lens. In full frame equivalence, this would be 28-84mm. This lens is small, and has zero problems with hot spots. And considering that the EM5ii itself is a small camera, it is easy to take this combo along whenever I am in the mood for doing IR.

Which digital scope do your recommend?

In the 1990s I consulted with a single owner gentleman in Australia by email regarding problems he was having with Organoceramic Titanium electrodes for pool chlorination and other Chlorine production. I had an Intel/Matel "toy" computer coupled microscope and suggested that he purchase one. I showed him a couple of electrode samples and he was pleased withe the results. I charged him nothing... however based on that free work, a large company in Australia contacted me and I had two week expense paid Australian adventure at $1000 a day; a fortune in the 90s!!! Great, yes, no, I should have said heck if successful 10 cents US a sq foot. He built a huge plant based on his early successful best in the world electrodes. Oh well coulda-shoulda.

I have a Dino-Lite. There are many models to choose from. And I have the vertical stand for it. Just plug the USB cable into a computer and you are in business.
