Due to the purchase of a new car, I had to move to a smartphone to control some functions. Up until now, I never felt the need for one. I read reviews online and locked onto the Samsung S23 Ultra 512gb. What interest me most was the potential for drawing. It was a preorder.

As the phone is being released, I read the reviews and all tout different features, its camera capabilities. I am not a fan of smartphones as a camera as when I print, these are large, something a phone capture so far has not been able to do, regardless of post-processing.

Still, I am not a complete idiot refusing progress, so I will test the camera starting tomorrow as the phone is to be delivered today. I will compare it to my Nikon 850. Unfair? Well, it depends on what you try to do. I have always thought that more often a cell phone is better than no camera, so I do recognize their usefulness.

I will add to this as I progress.

Note: I am considering getting a second one for my wife. She also has an antiquated flip phone.

"I will compare it to my Nikon 850"

Why bother? Comparison might be a waste of time. Instead, write about what makes your new phone unique as a camera?

I carried my (now ancient) Samsung Galaxy S9 for a couple years before I decided I should figure out what it can do well. In my case it started with the discovery that I could take a photo in the Lightroom app on the phone and have it automatically imported and waiting for me in Lightroom Classic. Even RAW shots! DSLRs can't do that.

Apple and Samsung have spent way more money than Nikon on developing imagining magic. Figure out what parts of that are useful to you!

As mentioned, I always print large (average is 4 feet wide). The camera is an accessory, possibly useful. I want to know what I am dealing with compared with the D850. I doubt I can achieve the results I get with the regular camera. Now, I certainly cannot draw with my camera…

I just got a new S-23 ultra and the camera is awesome. As a travel camera, I think it will be much better than any of my old phone cameras. The low light and night shots are beyond belief. If you are looking for super high quality shots, Take your Canon but for Facebook and good all around photos this camera is fantastic. I am getting ready to go to the Bahamas and will take my Canon R and the Samsung.

Take my…. Canon?????????????????

I have two Nikon!!!

In the meantime I have not played with it yet as I need to learn what this thing does. First time encounter with a smartphone… Like uploading/downloading to a PD…

Another unexpected issue I should have been aware of (I am kind of dumb that way) I had eye surgery in 2015. I need reading glasses to use it.

LOL. Take your Nikon, sorry. You will be amazed at what it can do. Look on youtube for videos on the s22 or S23 ultra. Have fun with it.

If your workflow includes moving files to your computer with SD cards, you have some new tricks to learn! When leading a video editing learning group where members all wanted to use phones, one of the hurdles was helping each arrive at a usable file transfer solution.

If there was a SD card, it would be easy. There is none. I have not looked onto it yet, but I have learned how to reset the phone to its factory settings!!!

I connected it to my PC, no big deal other than the connection has to be approved every time.

The phone appears and so does all directories.

Pictures? Nada, nothing. I copied one I had in there. It was usable on the phone.
I discovered the phone images under DCIM (normal name) but it was 'buried' under the Android directory.

Then the dung hit the fan!!!
The images are great - in the phone -, even on the web, but completely unusable for anything else. I am sending it back.

I am done.

'I am done.'

Does that mean we don't get to talk about it now? I was getting ready to explain how easy it is to get quality images from phone to computer. But, no more?

Small weird update...

I repacked the phone, turned off.

After a few minutes, as I was taping the shipping box, the darn thing chimed. I guess it turned itself on! I have no idea how, as I packed it exactly as it was when I received it.

You might want to check this guy out...

Then he has a very interesting video on using the stylus. (He almost made me keep the phone).

This is the S22, but everything applies to the S23.
