I know this is obvious, but I'm saying it, anyway. Before you make the final click on PayPal, make sure you have the right payment method selected. My last purchase with PP went to my checking account, rather than a CC. It was no big deal, since I had to pay one way or another, but just watch out for that. I don't know how that happened since I've never used the checking account with PP, and I've since deleted it.

Also, often, not long after I made a PayPal order, I got an e-mail with the PayPal logo on it saying that I just ordered a product for $469.99 or thereabouts, and call their customer service if there was a problem. The number they provided was a fake PayPal customer service. (It was an obvious scam, so I deleted!) The same thing happened when I sent a package FedEx, and a bogus package facilitator service tried to convince me that my package was being delayed unless I sent them money. Still don't know how they knew I had sent a package FedEx. All kinds of traps out there...

It's a good idea to periodically check your list of recent transactions on PayPal. You may be surprised to see one or more "pending" transactions where supposed vendors have requested payment for supposed purchases, which you actually never made. It is up to you to decline/delete these transactions. I actually don't know what PayPal eventually does with these "pending" transactions, and frankly don't want to find out.

I receive similar emails and don’t even have a PayPal account.

There must be something magical about that 469.99 number. I also got an e-mail that said they were charging my account for that due to a "money request" from someone!

I got one today for a Geek Squad subscription (not from PayPal, though). Usually, they go right to Spam.

NEVER! reply to such an E-mail even if you think it is legit. Either go to the company's website or call their real number and NOT the number in the E-Mail. For Paypal just checking your account on-line will usually give you the answer.

Myself as well. One thing about PayPal, the first and last time I will use them: they say you can pay in 4 pymts, but they take it out of your account every 2 weeks. Not one every 30 days. I was told "it's in the fine print"....

Jerry, I haven’t checked in a while even tho I continue to use PayPal, especially for charitable contributions. But, isn’t there a button somewhere that says “make this my ‘default’ payment method? I had the same issue as you a few times a couple years ago, then clicked on something and it hasn’t happened since. I still check the right payment method is checked each time I buy though.

They don't know. They're (ph)fishing. For every thousand they send out there are several who coincidentally fit the message. You shouldn't even click the message. That lets them know it is a valid email and it is worth more on the black market than a non-confirmed email and it tells everyone to send all spams to it. Never click. Go to the legitimate website for that entity and check your account to see if they are trying to contact you.

Thanks for posting these tips. I haven't used PayPal in Many (pre-1999) and I still receive notices/warnings from them. I no longer have the credit card that I set up that account with anymore, so I don't respond to any of their Phishing attempts. The same goes for our credit cards. We receive phone calls regarding fraud alerts, screened by our answering machine, requesting "additional information, verification" or the three-digit code on the back of the card. We just call the number on the back of the card to get any issues cleared up. There is a lot to be concerned about nowadays.
Best Wishes,
JimmyT Sends

Edit: With my no-fee Credit Card I also receive a rebate check at the end of the year for all of my charges.

Yes, there is, but I tend to choose one card over another for one reason for another. I might have intended to click on the bank CC and clicked on the bank itself. No harm done.
