My Experience with Canon R7 With Third Party Lenses

I recently purchased a Canon R7 and the Canon mount adapter for EF to EOS R with control ring. Here are the existing lenses and lens accessories I had:

Canon EF 50MM f/1.4 Ultrasonic
Canon 70-200mm EF f2.8 L IS II USM
Sigma 10-20mm DC HSM
Sigma 150-500 mm f5/6.3 APO DG OS HSM
Tamron 90mm Macro Di SP AF f/2.8
Tamron 18 - 270mm Di II f/3.5 - f/6.3
Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 DI VC USD
Tamron 2X teleconverter
Kenko Set of 3 extension tubes - 12mm, 20mm & 36mm

I'm pleased to report that all of these with the exception for the Sigma 150-500 appear to work perfectly on the R7 via the adapter. The issue with the Sigma 150-500 is that the adapter just won't physically mount with the lens. It will mount part way, but the fit is too tight to completely click into place. I can put the teleconverter on the lens and then mount the TC on the adapter, although that is not a recipe for sharp photos.

I'm wondering if one of the third-party EOS to R adapters might have a looser tolerance and thus allow the big Sigma to mount.

I would say all the adapters are to tight tolerances vs the Sigma not being to such tight tolerances. Unfortunately the Canon adapter is on the small side of those tolerances and the Sigma with looser tolerances is on the big side thus the inability to fit.
That is also likely one of the reasons Canon is working to get 3rd party makers to meet Canon tolerances, among other things before they will allow for 3rd party lenses.
You could get another adapter that might be at the other end of tolerance that would fit.
I have found various 3rd party products seem to not have the tight tolerances of Canon.
Good luck and enjoy your R7.

When is Canon going to get more RF lenes?

There is a list published by Canon in numerous locations on the internet.
Photo Rumors has a list
Cameraegg.org has a 2023 list.

It wouldn't be expensive to try... some 3rd party EF-to-RF adapters cost half what the Canon do.... basic ones are under $50.

Other 3rd party are even more of a discount... For example the Meike with drop-in Variable ND filter costs $160, which includes a clear filter for times the ND isn't wanted... AND reportedly produces better image quality than the Canon OEM version that costs $530! ($399 for the adapter and Vari ND, plus $129.99 for a clear drop in filter)

Update - I tried again, using a little more force, and the Sigma 150-500 lens clicked in place on the adapter, and works! It's a tight fit, though. I'm wondering if a little lubricant would help, or would that be a bad idea? I don't want to get it on any of the glass, nor do I want to interfere with the electrical contacts. If I did use a small amount, what kind - maybe a tiny amount of silicon lubricant?

No lubricant.
Just use the slightly more force.
I found one of my 3rd party adapters is slightly tighter but not so much as to worry.

I would not lubricate it. You want a tight fit to prevent any chance of accidental release.

But if it really seems necessary, "lubricate" very lightly by gently rubbing a paraffin candle (unlit) on the bayonet surface. That will leave a tiny amount of wax on the surface, which should provide plenty of lubrication, without much risk of it getting onto the optics or anywhere else you don't want it.(BTW, the same trick can be used on filter threads.)

Don't have a candle handy? Car wax might be an alternative. I've heard it mentioned, but haven't ever tried it myself.
