Collisions with deer kill over four hundred motorists a year, with most collisions occurring in November.

A few years ago, the insurance companies in Kansas wanted to drop deer collision coverage - thankfully the state insurance board told them if they did they would not be allowed to practice in the state...
My friend keeps track of the white tail herd across the road from his house and last count was 39 - he was hoping they would come on his land during hunting season but they stayed put...

The daughter of a coworker hit deer in consecutive Januarys, in the same car, on the same off-ramp from I-94 in Ann Arbor, MI.

States have considered putting birth control in salt licks. Seems kinda iffy.

Probably more survivable than hitting a moose. They are so tall that the body often slides across your hood and crashes through the windshield and you.

Another thing you never want to hit is a Hog or large feral pig. Lots of mass and a low CG. A friend of mine hit one and totaled the car (which wasn’t that old at the time).

Another friend had a deer hit HIM while riding a good sized Triumph on a back 2 lane road a couple of months ago. The deer hit the front wheel which knocked it violently to one side, and the bike threw him off into the roadway (asphalt). He was wearing good protective gear (but only summer gloves) so his hands took a beating, and hurt his knee. Broke a finger and lost some skin and hobbled around for awhile, but looking at the helmet and face shield, if he had been wearing anything else, he’d either be dead or badly disfigured. The bike was totaled, and since he’s 60, he figured he was lucky, packed it in and gave up motorcycle riding.

And most of the deaths come from trying to miss the deer/ dogs etc.!!! and losing control of the car.

While it's not easy to just hit the animal its, usually much safer for the occupants.
I have been in this situation eleven times over the last 30 years, But learning from trying to avoid a dog and almost wrecking the car and still hitting the dog,When I know I'm going to hit an animal I apply the brakes hold the car straight and at the last second close my eyes(when hitting a deer) for a second. so far every time the car has been drivable even though somewhat worse for the wear.
For a person I would do anything to try to miss them.

Living in PA I can attest to it being in the highest bracket. What really surprises me is Tennessee. It is heavily wooded and the Great Smokie Mountains Park is the most visited National Park every year by a couple of million visits (due to it being within a day's drive of 75% of the US population). It even shows Mississippi having more incidents and they have much less population than Tennessee. It seems like Virginia and North Carolina would also be higher on the scale.

Well I hit a deer the first of November on the right fender and it was still drivable . Damage around 4000.00 dollars. Took it to my preferred provider and couldn't get in until December 12th. I finally got the car back January 5th. Body shops can't get parts there on backorder. What's worse out west we still have open range so if you hit a cow it is your responsibility to pay for the cow! Can you believe we still have open range? It is dangerous on many highways where there is a high concentration of cattle.

Well I hit a deer the first of November on the rig... (show quote)

My son's Fit was more hit by the deer than the car hitting the animal. His dashcam showed less than a second between the deer appearing and the collision. After close examination, the car was totaled. If you get enough things bend and damaged - and a popped airbag - it gets totaled. It was about a year old. Now he has a 2020 Fit.

Our local vet rolled her car avoiding a deer last May - she is still in physical therapy and is worried that she will never regain her shoulder strength to allow her to continue to be a farm vet - hopefully the therapy will bring all her strength back...

My son that lives in Oklahoma has hit dear and cows on multiple occasions in both a company truck and his personal vehicle. All the hits have been in the early mornings. He hit a bull so hard that the testicles wrapped around his trucks axle (company truck).

Yup, been there, hit that... 'cept it was a moose. Fortunately, I wasn't driving very fast- 40-ish- but the hood of my Ford Explorer slipped under the moose's belly and rolled momma moose right on top of the roof. The moose then slid off, kicked the passenger side mirror to pieces and wandered into the taiga. It was late in the evening, on a road with little traffic and about twenty below zero. Fan blades made distinctive, nervous "clicks" for the full twenty miles back to Fairbanks and the radiator leaked a variety of happy colors. My insurance company was understanding, having seen before car hoods bowed up in the middle, cracked windshields, car roofs with noticeable depressions and shattered moon roofs. The mirror took some explaining... It was an entertaining night.

It is a bit of a problem - the percentages are low.

Perhaps they should move the deer crossing signs to places the deer prefer.
