The L J Huber Ranch

Architect1776 Loc: In my mind

This is my grandfather's house on his ranch.
It was all adobe with stucco over it and a red brick chimney.
It also had a basement where home canned goods were stored.
There were two parts, 1 was for raising cattle and grazing land (Horses as well). 2. Citrus orchards, date tree orchards and pecan tree orchards.
I loved listening to the wild peacocks calling out in the evenings.

The shed is where he kept the harnesses for the plow horses. Note the three dogs at the right of the shed sort of in the shadows.

The final 2 photos are my dad before WWII plowing with the horses and seeding for growing alfalfa as a supplement to feeding the cattle. And him later in life picking some oranges for us to take to our home.
Obviously I did not take the plowing photo but thought it was helpful to the story.

My grandfather farmed with horses. He still had them when I was born, but had already moved on to a tractor. Of all the pictures my family took, no one captured the farming. It was too commonplace!

I was able to ride one of the last horses that he used, Ol' Dolly.
We obviously had our own horses but it was a treat to have that connection to the past for us.

Not a plow that your father is using, but row seeder. The disc that comers toward the camera helps spacing the rows consistently. It could be used for corn or beans or other row crops.

Wrong word plow .
Correct what was doing which was seeding.
