Marksmen Supervillain Night

Having been knocked down (but not out!) by the flu, I haven't shot mcu recently. But I did make it to the Marksmen's Supervillain Night in which they dressed up in outfits reminiscent of The Joker!
These shot with a Z9 fitted with a 70-200 f2.8 S lens. 1/1600th, ISO 5000 wide open.

The final image in this series is amazing!
How anyone could find a shot into the net behind this fellow seems nearly impossible.

Hope you were shooting from behind the plexiglass, I would be terrified to not having shielding to deflect a 100mph puck heading straight at me!

Thanks for sharing...
Glad you're recovering from the flu.
btw, got my flu shot last week, my son insisted :)

Thank you for your kind words! I agree about trying to find an opening. When I am essentially looking the same way an attacking player is, how in the world can one get the puck by them!

The last shot was taken alongside the rink and through the glass. So I most definitely have plexiglass in front of me! For the shots not facing the goalie, I am behind the plexiglass a little to towards the corner, but still pretty much straight on.

Funny thing is you get used to the puck going by or hitting the boards in front of you. Things that get my attention are when the puck comes eye level at my face or when players hit the plexiglass full force in front of me. Nothing like having multiple players up against the glass about a foot in front of you! I have moved to a flexible rubber hood to allow me to get close to the glass without getting my lens and camera pushed back into my face!

You kind of learn along the way!

It doesn't take too many times getting a camera smacked into a nose to for the reflexes to sharpen up does it!

Your series is top notch. There's something about image 22 that just grabs my attention. Maybe the depth that the puck creates. Definately a cool capture.

Good stuff Rick. Favorites are 4 and 5. Could you have stopped the action at 1/1250 only to lower the iso. Never shot hockey so I don't know.

Thanks, Jules. In response to your question about shooting at 1/1250th, it is a definitive "maybe". I have experimented with speeds from 1/800 - 1/2000 to see what I could do with the ISO. The low end introduces motion quite a bit, the high end introduces noise. I've chosen to go with 1/1600 - 1/2000 to freeze the action and address noise in post processing. The ice with white surface underneath does provide a little more light. But as I shoot "across" the ice, then the light seems to dwindle a bit. As I will have to do some work, I try to at least freeze the action.

Great answer Rick as I had no idea the good and bad of shooting this sport. Your photos is hang on the wall stuff.
