I see a lot of expired film for sale. Can someone explain why you would want to shoot expired film? Is it a cost issue or is there a technical benefit? Thanks!
If you get it developed by others, it's just as expensive as new.
I shoot almost exclusively expired film. For the most part, it's just as good as new. You do need to adjust the exposure, adding at least 1-stop per 10 years of age for color. B&W doesn't need as much added exposure, but it doesn't hurt.
I try to buy bulk lots, getting an average of about $1 to $2 per roll of 36-exposure 35mm negative, buying 20 to 50 rolls at a time. I only buy rolls where the seller claims they've been kept frozen or refrigerated. I just put the rolls right into my freezer upon receipt. I unfreeze rolls about 36-hours before planning to shoot.
You'll see people listing film on ebay for prices as if it was new. That's just silly.

I also shoot expired film (when I have the time)... I love the excitement of not knowing what you will get (I particularly like expired color film for that reason). Unlike CHG_Canon, I'll buy / shoot anything, regardless of how it was stored. That just adds to the fun IMHO. A disclaimer tho... I only shoot that for scenes that I can see any time... never for those "once in a lifetime" event. And CHG_Canon is right, there really is no financial savings if you get others to develop it for you. It is fun tho!
