I have the Sony RX100 VII (M7) with its built in 24-200 (optical) zoom lens.
The camera has the ability to use Sony's Clear Image Zoom which essentially extends
the zoom range to 400mm. My understanding is that the Image Quality is good
but not quite as good as just using the optical zoom.
My question is: when using Clear Image Zoom, is the Image Quality not as good
as just using the optical zoom, throughout the whole 24-400 range, or does the
degradation in quality only exist when you are in the 200-400 part of the range?
Many thanks,
Larry
I believe it doesn’t kick in until you zoom past 200mm.

Correct and it works good enough for most people.

Hi Larry,
Clear Image Zoom is a type of digital zoom, but not the usual kind of digital zoom that immediately degrades image quality. CIZ does it so well that the image degradation barely discernible. You can still make very nice prints using CIZ to bring subjects closer in, even better than cropping an image made within the optical zoom range.
Larry thanks for this post. I picked up the Mark 7 about two weeks ago after the recommendation from several Hoggers, especially Greg (Wingpilot). I didn't even know this feature existed, thanks for asking this question. I'm still trying to get the basics of this camera down. I will try Clear Image Zoom while still playing with all the features and learning. I didn't have this much trouble learning my D750.
Nonetheless, I'm enjoying the camera so far. My issue is I'm still not able to master is the panorama setting. I'm asking if there is a feature I might not have turned on or off as I cannot take a panorama photo. The camera continually tells me I'm moving too fast or I'm not moving in the direction of the arrow. I've gone slow, I've gone faster....yet still can't manage to capture an image. Also when I go extremely slow the camera tells me to move in the direction of the arrow which I'm doing. I'd love to hear from some of you Hoggers that own the camera and perhaps have some tips for me. Thank you in advance and sorry for stealing your post with another question.

The panorama feature is nice, but it takes a bit of practice to get the proper speed down. Once you get the feel for it, it is fairly easy to replicate every time you use it. But until that happens, it can be very frustrating for sure. I would suggest just keep practicing until it just comes natural. One thing that I have done is reset the arrow to point upward, and then hold the camera in portrait position so the arrow points to the right. Instead of moving the camera, I pivot my entire body. That works pretty well for me. A side benefit is that I have a taller image to work with in post processing.
Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try. I appreciate all the help I can get. I'm just trying to get the photo-taking part of the camera down before I even attempt to use the video features of this camera. I'm quite impressed with all the bells and whistles of this camera. Hard to believe they got so many features in such a small camera.

Yes, with the newer point and shoots the CIZ is not engaged until you go past the max optical zoom point. On the older IL cameras, CIZ can be engaged for the whole zoom range.
