Jerry is absolutely right! Here in southern New England (and a lot of the north east from what I've read), the wild turkey population is exploding, no natural predator's since you can't shoot them in most towns. I have a large group that regularly strut around the neighborhood. I live in a residential/suburban area, They do fly into the trees to sleep, they walk down the middle of the street, attack cars if they are honked at, they are generally considered an amusing and delightful nuisance in the area. It's only the white ones, bred for food that can't fly, probably by design.

We have a bunch (herd, gaggle, group?) of them on the lawn almost every day. I'd give them names, but I can't tell them apart.

Take each one of them aside and whisper your chosen name to them. Then when you call out a name one will answer and you’ll know who’s who! (whom?)

What is funny is that it was based on a real incident where a radio station actually dropped turkeys.
The last line of the explanation is a HOOT!

CLARKE BROWN: The turkey drop was actually a real incident. It was at a shopping center in Atlanta; I think it was Broadview Plaza, which no longer exists. It was a Thanksgiving promotion. We thought that we could throw these live turkeys out into the crowd for their Thanksgiving dinners. All of us, naïve and uneducated, thought that turkeys could fly. Of course, they went just fuckin’ splat.

Complete story:

The turkey drop was actually a real incident.

People were laughing at us, not with us. But it became a legend. In reality, the turkeys were thrown off the back of a truck.

So, the real story is not as glamorous as the WKRP version but the lesson is the same: Turkeys can’t fly.

Wild turkeys can and do fly. Have them on my property in NC, and occasionally one will land on my roof. They sound like a fallen tree limb when they hit the roof.
