To judge serious ballheads by a pistol grip is a joke. Not in the same league. Ballheads are well suited to fast changing situations, including wildlife. Portraiture can be very slow or quick depending on your style.

I'd like some recommendations please for a tripod head, which I'll be using on a Manfrotto 458B. I currently have a pistol grip, with which I'm not in love and it will probably be in our Classifieds shortly.

MUST be Arca plate compatible, and as reasonably priced as possible. Presently I'm thinking about a Benro HD2A 3-way Pan Head, but would welcome any reasons as to why this is model is a bad idea, or reasons why a pan/tilt is bad idea (never had one) and/or generally better suggestions. That the Benro doesn't have a level on it puts me off just a little.

And while I appreciate that there is a lovely Gitzo fluid head out there for a mere $600, that isn't part of the current financial game plan!

The head & tripod will not be used that often, mostly for simple family portrait stuff, and occasionally for wildlife with a 100-500 type zoom, so nothing too arduous.

And if you happen to have a nice one in great condition that would fit the bill & that you'd like to sell, please PM me. I'll be traveling for a few days so I probably won't reply immediately.

For wildlife, if your serious, a tripod only slows you down. For wildlife photography you must be able to be mobile at the drop of your hat. I photograph in Florida's wetlands, I have photographed with folks who use tripods, they miss the shots I get because birds don't fly in a straight line all the time. If they are low or high the tripod folks always miss the shot.
As far as portraits go, that 100-500 lens is not really designed for portrait stuff.
I strongly suggest you reassess your situation to improve your choices.

The 100-500 is most definitely not used for portraiture. I'm sure some people can and do, but certainly not me. About the only thing I use a long lens for is a family of owls that live close by, and hummingbirds, and in both cases a stationary tripod works just fine.

The only time I use a tripod for portraiture is more accurately family group photos, on the rare occasions I want to be included.

The tripod has had very little use, which is one of the reasons I don't want to spend the kind of serious money you can spend if you have a serious use for one.

So, no need to reassess my thinking very much.

Appreciate all the responses, and I'll stick with my original choice.

May I suggest the first line to be your budgeted amount? After budget, listing your needs will help everyone naroow your search most effectively.

From above..

"Budget is around $150, and there is something to be had for less, so much the better. I'm happy to buy used, too."

If a ballhead is ok I have had good success with the Sirui k30x ($123) and k40x ($138).
